Happy Birthday Grace!

This young lady came in today wearing a sticker that said "I'm 18 today" and asked for a voter registration application. Her mom said that this was just one of her birthday activities and that she has been looking forward to this day when she can share the privileges of voting with her daughters. Today was Grace's 18th birthday and voter registration day.

Do you remember when you registered to vote? Do you remember the first time you voted?
Todays Talking Points

Key Point: The five year record of Bush Republicans is a catalogue of incompetence and misleading, and the American people have paid the price. From Iraq to Katrina, from gas prices to health care costs, from the minimum wage to Medicare part D, it is time for a new direction.

Real Security
The Hamdan decision was a stunning rebuke of the Bush Administration's reckless anti-terror policies. Now it is time for tough AND smart policies to secure America.

We must do everything we can to protect Americans from terrorism and keep terrorists in custody.

As the Supreme Court ruled, we can fight terrorism in a way that is consistent with the Constitution and core American values.

By exceeding his authority, the President has created legal uncertainty that makes America less safe. He needs to work with Congress now to ensure that we have a sound legal process to punish captured terrorists.

Stem Cells
Millions of Americans hold out the hope that stem cell research will provide new cures for diseases. Bush Republicans have made them wait for too long.

There is finally an agreement to move forward on stem cell legislation. The Senate has already waited over a year to act. The American people expect it will not wait three more months.

The Republican leadership should take up this legislation in July so that the wait can end for millions of Americans.

Immigration
Five years of Bush Republican incompetence has left America's borders unsecured and our immigration system broken.

It is time for tough, comprehensive immigration reform to secure the borders and enforce our laws.

Democrats have announced they are ready to move forward-the ball is in the Republican court.

President Bush told the American people he supports comprehensive immigration reform. Now he must tell Republicans in Congress to stop obstructing it.

BE A DEMOCRAT

This letter to the editor from Kay County Democratic Party Chair Bret Carter was published in the Ponca City News yesterday.

Letter to the Editor- Be a Democrat

While Americans worry about the costs of college tuition and health care, and while many Americans and Oklahomans worry about just their getting family through every day when working for minimum wage, the Bush Republicans have turned a blind eye to the real issues affecting everyone. We can do better, and Democrats are leading the way.

While health care costs have risen 41 percent since 2000, making it unaffordable for many working families, children, and elderly, the Bush Republicans have insured record profits for pharmaceutical manufacturers. We can do better, and Democrats are leading the way. Democrats will address the affordability of health care by fixing the Republican prescription drug program and making insurance more affordable for both employees and employers.

While college costs soared, making a college degree impossible for children wanting to live the American Dream, the Bush Republicans have slashed federal financial aid for college students. In Oklahoma alone, tuition has increased by 71 percent , into including books, housing, and food. We can do better, and Democrats are leading the way. Democrats have a plan to make college more affordable for Oklahomans by making college tuition deductible, expanding Pell Grants and lowering the cost of student loans.

The economy that Bush Republicans have created is not working for Oklahoma families. Since 2000, 27000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in Oklahoma, and 69000 people are looking for a job. The minimum wage is at the lowest level in 50 years (when evaluated against the costs of living), so the theory that lower wages create jobs has been proven tragically wrong, and has cast many families into a position where every day they awaken wondering if they can feed their family and praying that no one gets sick. We can do better, and Democrats are leading the way. Democrats are fighting to repeal the tax giveaways that move jobs overseas, to restore the fiscal discipline of the 1990s, and to increase the minimum wage to $7.25. The minimum wage change alone would benefit 183,000 hardworking Oklahomans.

It is time for Americans and Oklahomans to wake up, to get involved, and to push our elected officials — who are supposed to answer to us — to do what we need done! Democrats will work to restore the dignity of our elderly, the opportunities of our youth, and the stability of American's middle class — all of which are being destroyed by Bush Republicans.

I believe that registering as a Democrat and being an active Democrat and being sure to let our elected officials know what we want is the path to returning Oklahoma and America to the true Democracy it was designed to be! Get active today!

PATRIOTIC WOMEN OF AMERICA

PATRIOTIC WOMEN OF AMERICA
This is a letter that was send to me by a very nice and kind lady in Oklahoma, Miss Awnalee

In the November election of 2000, 22 million unmarried women who were eligible chose not to vote! Since then, life in our USA for the majority of the people has gone from hopeful to hopeless.

Almost everything costs more and wages have not increased at the same rate. Many have lost their jobs because companies get tax breaks when they take jobs out of our USA. Each time one powerful corporation or one wealthy person gets another tax cut, thousands upon thousands of middle income and low income people suffer.

Many public education and health care programs ate being eliminated due to lack of funding. Oklahoma roads and bridges are falling apart and low income widows are being evicted because there is no money to pay the electric bill.

Studies indicate that Oklahoma has the most hungry children in America. Oklahoma is also dead last in vaccinations against childhood diseases.

The religious community can neither finance nor provide all the care our people need. Research indicates something we already knew, the most wealthy give the least to charity. So don't count on charitable organizations; their bank accounts are also suffering. All bullies have one thing in common. They want those they abuse to believe they are helpless to stop the harassment and improve their lives. This is not true. Together, we women can make a positive difference in our state and our nation!

These bullies have not yet taken away one of our most important freedoms. We can still V-O-T-E. Except for about three different faiths that do not participate in this process and the women serving time in our prisons, the remainder of us have no good excuse for not voting.

There are three different voter registration forms. One is for regular applicants. Another is for those who are not available to vote on election day. And yet another is for those who are disabled to the extent that they can not travel to their precinct’s voting location.

There are brief periods of time that you can not register to vote or change from one political party to another. If you are not registered to vote, please do so at your earliest convenience. Voter registration forms are available at the post office, public library, motor vehicle office, and many other state and federal offices.

To become a well informed voter - read, listen, and think. Do not rely on one television or radio station or one newspaper. You man receive only one political viewpoint. Read! Visit your public library. Learn about the different political parties. Know which one supports the people and which one supports the powerful corporations and the wealthy.

I hope you will choose to take these first steps toward helping make our neighborhood, our city, our county, our state, and our nation a better place for all THE PEOPLE OF our USA!
-Miss Awnalee

CONNECT THE DOTS

It's time to put pencil to paper and connect the dots between Karl Rove and the K Street lobbyists in Washington and the Oklahoma GOP. Some news sources have been making a case for a "pay to play" scheme operated out of the state capitol, a scheme that connects the dots between Ernest Istook, Jack Abramoff, Karl Rove, Todd Hiett and others. Now GOP wannabe Guv Bob Sullivan has signed onto Grover Norquist's dotted line with the extremist Americans for Tax Reform group. Norquist and his gang are the ones who want to shrink government down to the size that you can "drown it in the bathtub." [Why do they hate government? Why do they hate public schools and highways? Why do they hate America?]

And now you too can connect the dots between these DC politicos and the local GOPers . . . it's easy . . . Tom DeLay . . . Karl Rove . . . Scooter Libby . . . Grover Norquist . . .Ernest Istook . . .Todd Hiett . . . Bob Sullivan . . . spooooooky.

MAPPING A MAJORITY

I've been saying that MAJORITY MATTERS whenever people ask about fighting for control of the State Senate....we all know it matters but how does it matter? Yesterday's SCOTUS ruling is a good example of why it matters which party is in the majority. And I doubt that anyone is surprised that Bush's Supreme Court would rule yesterday on the side of disgraced GOPer Tom Delay's Congressional redistricting plan for Texas?

Here's the headline and lead paragraph from the Washington Post:

Justices Affirm GOP Map For Texas Other States May Follow Suit
By Charles Lane and Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, June 29, 2006; A01

The Supreme Court upheld most of Texas's Republican-drafted 2003 congressional redistricting plan yesterday in a ruling that could prompt majority parties in other states to redraw political maps to their advantage. Read the rest of the article here.

We well remember when Texas Democrats crossed the border in order to quash a vote on this issue. And now some states are taking a hard look at this issue and are pushing for non-partisan redistricting. It's something we should consider in Oklahoma.

So grab a handful of M&Ms and think Majority Matters! Because they melt in your mouth, not in your hand, you'll have time to tell us why Majority Matters to you. Comments are open.
ONE NATION UNDER GOD

I listened to Senator Barak Obama on tv early this morning discussing yesterday's speech calling on Democrats to speak authentically and contextually about their faith. Amen and amen.

The Washington Post reported it this way:

Obama: Democrats Must Court Evangelicals
By DAVID ESPO
Washington Post
June 28, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Barack Obama chastised fellow Democrats on Wednesday for failing to "acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people," and said the party must compete for the support of evangelicals and other churchgoing Americans.

"Not every mention of God in public is a breach to the wall of separation. Context matters," the Illinois Democrat said in remarks prepared for delivery to a conference of Call to Renewal, a faith-based movement to overcome poverty.

"It is doubtful that children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance feel oppressed or brainwashed as a consequence of muttering the phrase `under God,'" he said. "Having voluntary student prayer groups using school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats."

Obama, the only black in the Senate, drew national notice even before arriving in Congress last year, and has occasionally used his visibility to scold members of his own party. Widely sought as a fundraiser for other Democrats, Obama responded with a noncommittal laugh this spring when asked whether he wants a spot on the national ticket in 2008.

His speech included unusually personal references to religion, the type of remarks that usually come more readily from Republicans than Democrats.

"Kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt I heard God's spirit beckoning me," he said of his walk down the aisle of the Trinity United Church of Christ. "I submitted myself to his will and dedicated myself to discovering his truth."

Obama said millions of Christians, Muslims and Jews have traveled similar religious paths, and that is why "we cannot abandon the field of religious discourse. ... In other words, if we don't reach out to evangelical Christians and other religious Americans and tell them what we stand for, Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons will continue to hold sway."

Obama coupled his advice with a warning. "Nothing is more transparent than inauthentic expressions of faith: the politicians who shows up at a black church around election time and claps _ off rhythm _ to the gospel choir."

At the same time, he said, "Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering the public square."

As a result, "I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people and join a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern, pluralistic democracy."

Obama mentioned leaders of the religious right briefly, saying they must "accept some ground rules for collaboration" and recognize the importance of the separation of church and state.

As for me, my faith and family values taught me to live by the Golden Rule and to respect the wall of separation between church and state. How about you?

Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Morgan Comments on Signing of Budget and Tax Cut Bills

“Governor Henry’s signature of the budget and tax cut bills approved by the Legislature during last week’s special session is a victory for all Oklahomans.

“This year’s budget ensures that our classrooms will continue to be guided by the best and brightest teachers in the country, that our communities will be a safe place for Oklahomans to live, work and raise their families, that our senior citizens get hot meals at senior centers across the state, that our roads and bridges receive much needed repairs and that small business owners can offer affordable health insurance to their hard-working employees.

“The final tax cut package includes tax cuts for all Oklahomans. Including an increase in the standard deduction to the federal level, will put more money back into the pockets of middle class families, ensuring Oklahoma’s economy will continue to grow and prosper.

“In this budget debate not everyone got everything they wanted, but the compromise agreed to by both parties shows that we are doing our part to move Oklahoma forward.”

(This press release was issued by the Senate Communications Office.)

WEIGH IN WITH YOUR OPINION: TAKE THE WORKING WOMEN'S SURVEY

Working women know the importance of a good job in a just economy. We value jobs where our pay keeps up with prices. We value an environment where lawmakers listen to working people -- not just big corporations. We value an economy where one big medical expense doesn't wipe out a family's life savings. And whether you work in or outside of the home, this survey is our chance as working women to be heard!

The Ask a Working Woman survey is sponsored by the AFL-CIO, the largest organization of working women in America, and Working America, a community affiliate of the AFL-CIO. Responses from the survey are used to educate every U.S. representative and senator as well as state and local officials around the country on Labor Day.

MINIMUM WAGE AND WOMEN: REPUBLICANS NICKEL AND DIME WOMEN WORKERS

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, women are twice as likely as men to be minimum wage earners. Minimum wage is now at its lowest level in 50 years making it nearly impossible for minimum wage working women to pay for basic necessities. It would take a full day's pay at minimum wage to pay for one tank of gas, and most minimum wage workers are the major breadwinners within their families. [House Education and Workforce Committee]

Every day millions of American women work hard and play by the rules to try to ensure a better life for their families. The shameful reality is providing the basics on a minimum wage that amounts to $10,700 a year, struggling to make ends meet while health care costs, child care costs and gas prices continue to increase. Women minimum wage workers deserve a decent wage they can live on, and the fact is that today's minimum wage is indecent.

A non-partisan survey, showing that 77 percent of Americans believe raising the minimum wage should be a priority, provides further proof that Republicans are out of touch with the values and priorities of a majority of Americans. [EPI]

Our choices reflect our values and, once again, Republicans actions have shown that their actions do not value all Americans.

Today's Talking Points

Key Point: Bush Republicans have no plan for the war in Iraq, and their incompetence is making America less safe. Democrats, America's Generals, and the Iraqis agree it is time to change course in Iraq and begin the phased withdrawal of US troops. With new and growing threats around the world that must be addressed, it is time for a new direction.

Iraq
Five years of Bush Republican incompetence has made America less safe, and it is time for a change.
Bush Republicans have no plan for the future in Iraq. They stand for failed policies, and won't even condemn amnesty for terrorists who kill American soldiers.
Democrats, America's Generals, the Iraqi government, and the American people all agree that it is time to change course in Iraq and begin the phased redeployment of US troops.
New and growing threats around the world, from Iran to Afghanistan, North Korea to Somalia, will not wait for Bush Republicans to choose to meet them. The Democratic Real Security agenda is the tough AND smart plan to protect America's national security

Immigration
Five years of Bush Republican incompetence has left America's borders unsecured and our immigration system broken.
Democrats believe it's time for tough, comprehensive immigration reform to secure the borders and enforce our laws.
If President Bush is as committed to comprehensive immigration reform as he claims, he will pick up the telephone and tell Republicans in Congress to stop obstructing it.

Minimum Wage/Congressional pay raise
Congress is supposed to serve the people, but Republicans in Congress are ready to serve themselves.
Last week Bush Republicans rejected increasing the minimum wage. Now they're ready to give Congress a pay raise.
At a time when Americans are working more and making less, a Congress that is working less does not deserve to be making more.
Democrats believe Congress should not get a pay raise until it has raised the minimum wage for hard-working Americans.
Custer County Holds Standing Room Only Event
By Mack Miller

The Custer County Democrats held their first fundraiser tonite. The banquet room at the Mark Restauarant in Weatherford had standing room only.
Additional chairs were brought in, the room was full and people were standing.

Lt. Governor Candidates Senator Cal Hobson and Representative Jari Askins were present and allowed to speak. Also present was a representative from State Auditor Jeff McMahan's campaign, Tony Wilson (campaign manager for CD3 congressional candidate Greg Wilson), Senate District 38 Candidate Josh Woods, Senator Gilmer and Wanda Capps, and State Representative James and Yvonne Covey.

Featured speaker Frosty Troy was great as usual, bringing himself to tears once during his speech. Frosty even took questions at the end. The great `tell it like it is' speaker drew 2 standing ovations. He urged all Democrats to stand up and be proud to be Democrats. Frosty said he had spoke recently to a group of Young Republicans. "They must have wanted to hear the truth for a change," said Frosty. He told the Republicans present, "I will speak slowly so you can all understand what I am saying". Senator Hobson admitted he had made Frosty's list of the `5 worst senators' once.

Congratulations to Custer County Democratic Party officers for a VERY successful fundraiser tonight!

Why These Elections Are So Important

You hear it everywhere, from Democrats and Republicans, "this is the most important election in your lifetime". I say every election is important -- the election for school board, junior high student council, your neighborhood association and PTA board, your church board, the state house, county courthouse, Congress and the White House. Of course it is important, but why? Who cares?

Illinois Senator Barak Obama puts it this way:
These elections will determine who controls Congress and whether the priorities we share are addressed in Congress or whether we continue to fall farther and farther behind. Will we finally address the health care crisis in this country? Will we finally declare ourselves independent of Middle East oil? Or will we have the same old policies that favor the special interests?

And in Oklahoma, these elections will determine who controls the State Senate and whether the priorities we share are addressed in the State Legislature as we move into our centennial year. It determines whether Oklahoma children will have access to the best public education and health care. It determines if our working families will have jobs that support their families; it determines if we raise the minimum wage. It's about PEOPLE and PRIORITIES. Which will it be? A generous, open-minded approach from the Democrats, or something else from the Greedy Old Party?

How about you? Why are the 2006 elections important to YOU?

Kay County Summer Celebration

Congratulations to Bret Carter for a very nice event for Kay County Democrats in Ponca City last night.

All three Democratic candidates for 3rd District Congress were there -- from what I could tell they are all familiar with the folks there which means they've been working the district for some time. Since there are three candidates, does that mean that the Republican is three times as bad? I guess we could look at it that way! Thanks to all three of them for pointing out the deficiencies of the Bush Republicans; and yes, that includes the Congressman from the 3rd District. Thanks for putting your name on the ballot - Greg Wilson, Sue Barton and John Coffee Harris.

Sending representatives to the event were Governor Brad Henry, Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland, and Attorney General Drew Edmondson.

The three Lt. Governor candidates attended other events last night (I heard Jari Askins and Cal Hobson were both at the Custer County event in Weatherford.) Representing Pete Regan in Ponca City was his brother-in-law Kyle Dean. Yancy York was in town for Jari Askins. Don't forget the Lt. Gov. Candidate forum sponsored by the ODP and moderated by the KGOU news director will be July 6 at Langston University - OKC on North Lincoln Blvd. BTW, there is a fourth Democratic candidate, Jim Rogers, but he has informed me he does not participate in forums and is not attending these kind of fundraisers. He has declined our invitation to participate in the forum.

Candidate for County Commissioner Chuck Webb sat at my table. Good luck Chuck!

It was sure good to see former Senator Paul Muegge, a Profiles in Courage winner. And it was also good to see Scott and Margi Cooper. They live in Stillwater, but Scott works in Ponca City. Margi joined the ODP Yellow Dog Democrats Club last night. Thanks Margi! And I was going to say she was the newest member, but following the meeting Emily Hall signed up as a member. Thanks Emily! And I might add that Emily is our youngest Yellow Dog Democrats Club member.

3rd District vice chair Anita Norman was there inviting Kay County Democrats to participate in the district's retreat in Stillwater in August. I hope they turn the town blue!

Everyone is working to elect Democrats

Today Jason McCarty is headed to Stroud and Lisa Pryor is on her way to Ponca City. These trips are not made in vain they are trying to elect Democrats. In fact, the whole state is running around crazy and this office is not any different. Courtney Ruark, Teresa Hill, and I have been to many different places in the last week promoting The Democratic Party. The office is buzzing with candidates and voters calling to ask questions.

One of the ways I found to calm down a little bit is to bring Franchesca to work with me. She is my Bichon Frise and is two months old. She is the sweetest little thing and she reminds us to also have fun when we are working.

One thing that I love is people now look for her. There is not a time Connie Dodson (candidate in house district 23) does not stop by on her way upstairs to talk to Matt to ask if Franchesca is here! She puts a smile on my face and everyone who walks in our office. I just wish she could come to work with me more often.

Here is a picture of Franchesca hard at work for Democrats!
LATIMER COUNTY CHEERS GOVERNOR

I was pleased to keynote the Latimer County dinner Staurday night ( always happy to go there as it means I can spend the night with my Dad in Heavener!) and Wilburton was home to 150 fired-up Democrats that evening. Governor Brad Henry and First Lady Kim Henry made it to the event at the end of a long day of campaigning and received standing ovatons and cheers. Steve Brinlee was fantastic to work with as the county chair and emcee for the event. Feel free to invite me back for more of that good barbeque anytime!

College Tuition

Let's talk about college tuition today.

We'll have four children at OU next fall and one will be graduating in December from Florida State University -- that makes five in college at the same time - four undergraduates and one in graduate school. (And don't ask, we don't get a group rate!)

Personally, I think every student should have the opportunity to attend college. As for OHLAP, I think every 8th grade student should be signed up and then....it's theirs to lose. If they keep up the grades, stay out of trouble, and want to attend an Oklahoma college or technology center, they can do it. We should encourage our children to get the best education possible....to start and then finish their degree or certificate program....I dare say there are few college graduates in prison....seems that education is the key to success....and a productive life...BUT, it will cost us, all of us. BUT, then again, we will all benefit from an educated citizenry. What are the costs of not educating our children? of not providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful?

So, it's about the COST. Which gets back to the idea of TUITION. Who decides? In Oklahoma the state regents and college presidents determine tuition. The state legislature gave that authority to them in 2003, wisely removing it as a political football. Yesterday Governor Henry vetoed a bill that would have given that authority back to the legislature. OU President Boren and OSU President Schmidly both applauded Henry's veto and noted they are both trying to keep tuition increases as low as possible.

FYI, estimated costs for an Oklahoma resident student at OU for 2005-2006 is $12,436. Check it out at http://go2.ou.edu/money_matters.htm. Want to go to OSU? Check out their tuition and fees at http://bursar.okstate.edu/tuitionEstimate.asp.

What do you think?
Custer, Kay, and YDO

Democrats in Custer County and Kay County will gather tonight for fun, fellowship and fundraising.

Frosty Troy will speak to Custer County Dems at 7 p.m. at The Mark Restaurant. There's nothing better than Frosty in campaign season! If you haven't heard him recently, drive over to Weatherford and help out the Custer County Democrats, you'll be glad you did! If you go, post details here following the event, so those of us who will be somewhere else will have the benefit of Frosty's latest barbs. Jonathan Carter is doing a fine job as the Custer County Democratic Party Chairman.

I'll be at the Kay County Summer Celebration at the Ponca Townsite Company tonight. I don't hold a candle to Frosty, who does, but I'll have a few things to say about the incompetence of the Bush Republicans and the Democrats' vision for America. Bret Carter is also doing a nice job as Kay County Democratic Party Chairman.

If you can't make it to Weatherford or Ponca City, take a few minutes to drop by the Young Democrats of Oklahoma fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Oklahoma Asphalt Pavement Association, 3500 N. Lincoln, OKC.

(Do you have a Democratic Party function planned? Let us know so we can post it to the calendar. Email Lindsey Cox at lindseycox@okdemocrats.org).

In a word: From Honest to Incompetent

Bush's personal image has weakened noticeably, which is reflected in people's one-word descriptions of the president. Honesty had been the single trait most closely associated with Bush, but in a March survey "incompetent" is the descriptor used most frequently.

Incompetent leadership leads to incompetent government.

In the July/August 2006 edition of Washington Monthly Alan Wolfe asserts that "Contemporary conservativism is a walking contradiction. Unable to shrink government but unwilling to improve it, conservatives attempt to split the difference, expanding government for political gain, but always in ways that validate their disregard for the very thing they are expanding. The end result is not just bigger government, but more incompetent government.

What's your one-word description for the president?
ADAIR COUNTY DEMOCRATS

I heard glowing reports about the food, fun and speeches from Saturday's Adair County Democratic Party Rally.

The crowd was estimated at more than 300 for the BBQ and keynote speech by Governor Brad Henry. Senator Jim Wilson was the emcee.

Atha Jean Pettigrew was recognized as Adair County Democrat Activist of the Year. Other nominees included Jack Adair, Aaron Barton, Danny Benoit, Sam Chandler, Kenny Davidson, Virginia Ford, Vivian Garrett, George Hensley, Leonard Jones, Bruce Morris, Neil Morton, Regina Ruckman, Billy Jack Smith and Burlan Woods.

Event sponsors included Bill and Linda Langley, Rick and Suzanne Doherty, Danny and Jessie Curtis, Larry and Jan Adair, Mike Wininger, Jim Bennett, Rhondas Pritchett, Morris Jones, John Pettigrew, Danny Braden, Jan Huffman, Jim and Mary Bagby and Danya Curtis.

Congratulations to Chairman Danny Curtis and Co-chair Deanne Watt!
Pride Parade in OKC

Yesterday, I was among many people with my lawn chair camped out on the side of the road waiting for the parade to pass.

It was the first Gay Pride Parade I have ever been to, I wanted to get a good seat so I was early. It was a good thing because it was crowded and well worth the wait. There were democratic candidates in the parade so it was also nice to see people I knew participating. Casey Davis, Al McAffrey, Rhonda Rudd, Andrew Rice, and Jim Roth all took part in the festivities.

Several of the floats who passed handed out social and educational literature. So it was not just about fun.
Today's Talking Points

Key Point: Bush Republicans launched hollow political attacks when Democrats offered a real plan for the future in Iraq. But that was last week. Democrats, Iraqis, and General Casey all have concluded that the mission in Iraq must transition and success requires beginning the phased redeployment of US troops. Bush Republicans stand for no plan and no end, and they stand alone.

Iraq

Bush Republicans stand for nothing in Iraq but failed policies and staying forever. They won't even oppose amnesty for terrorists who kill American soldiers.

The America people want accountability, they want oversight, and they want a real plan for Iraq.

Military leaders and Democrats are on the same page -- that success in Iraq requires transitioning the mission and beginning the phased redeployment of US troops.

Bush Republicans have no strategy for Iraq except slogans. In the fourth year of the war, it is time for a change.

Flag Burning

At the gas station, at the pharmacy, and at the grocery store every day, Americans face real challenges. In Washington, Bush Republicans aren't paying attention.

Bush Republicans are against raising the minimum wage, they don't think energy independence is a priority, and instead of making college more affordable they want to tackle flag burning.

Democrats believe the first priorities of Congress should be the first priorities of the American people. Bush Republicans are out of touch, and it's time for a new direction.
Minimum Wage

Last Monday morning RAISE Oklahoma supporters rallied at the state capitol then took to the marble halls to convince legislators of what Oklahomans already know....the right thing to do is to increase the minimum wage. Linda Murphy and Chris Heldenbrand have been the leaders in this effort and are to be complimented for their efforts. Special thanks also to Rep. Richard Morrissette, Rep. Jari Askins, Senator Debbe Leftwich and Senator Cal Hobson for supporting these efforts to raise minimum wage.

At the same time Senate Democrats in Washington tried to raise the federal minimum wage, which stands at just $5.15 an hour. It has not been increased in nearly a decade, and at its current stingy level, the rate flies in the face of Americans' belief that those who work hard and play by the rules will be rewarded.

A minimum-wage worker earns just $10,700 a year, nearly $6,000 below the poverty line for a family of three. Americans across the political spectrum strongly support the minimum wage, and believe it should be significantly higher.

A recent poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that 83 percent of Americans favored increasing the minimum wage by $2.

If you have not yet signed the RAISE Oklahoma petition please call them today and offer your support for those who work hard and play by the rules. The number is 524-0522. Visit them at RAISE Oklahoma.
ODP Chair Expects Primary Campaigns to Focus on Issues

Political campaign rhetoric is heating up as the
calendar nears the primary election day on July
25. With just four weeks to go until the primary
election candidates across the state are turning up
the heat on their efforts to persuade voters that
their experience and leadership is worthy of your
vote, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairman Lisa
Pryor said today.

Voters deserve the facts about issues and
experience, Pryor said. It's our expectation that all
of our candidates will deliver the facts with integrity
while focusing on the issues and keeping an eye on
the prize of winning elections in November.

There's a lot of talk these days about clean
campaigns and I have confidence that our
candidates will give voters the information they need
to make election decisions based on facts rather
than personal attacks and innuendos, Pryor
said. As party chair I am most interested in
presenting the voters with candidates who run on
their credentials and public record of service.
Candidates who adhere to our party's core values of
respect and responsibility should have no problems
earning votes and the position of nominee.

She said half-truths, deceptions, innuendo and
personal attacks cheapen the democratic process
and cheat the voters of information they need to
make good decisions.

I invite the public to participate in the numerous
candidate forums being hosted throughout the
campaign season. Look the candidates in the eye,
shake their hand and ask them the hard questions,
and wait for their answers --- then you'll know who
will best represent you, she said.

Congress is Broken, Send a Doctor

So says Dr. David Hunter, Democratic Congressional candidate for the 5th District, who was a table sponsor for the recent Carl Albert Awards Dinner in Oklahoma City. The good doctor has sponsored tables at every Democratic event I've attended in the 5th District since announcing his candidacy. Hunter and his wife Dianne posed for this photo taken by Tim Reese at the event. Get more information about Dr. Hunter and his campaign at Hunter for Congress. Dianne told me at the event that she was a former American Airlines flight attendant, a union member. Don't take this couple for granted. They understand service and leadership.
Hancock Exposes Hiett's "Get Lost Little Children" Values

"Since Hiett has opened this door of being such a good Christian, one has to ask what has he done for the least of these?"

is the headline on page G2 of today's Tulsa World. The quote is from Ken Hancock's letter to the editor that questions Hiett's latest political commercial that alleges "souls will be saved" if he's elected. Hancock is right......read it below:

"The latest political commercial by Todd Hiett is geared to get the Christian vote. It points to what a great Christian he is by all the works that he has done. Christians know that not every one that says "Lord, Lord" is an actual Christian. By giving land to a church or helping to pass stronger anti-abortion legislation or being against gay marriage does not make one a Christian. Works do not get one into heaven.

Since Hiett has opened this door of being such a good Christian, one has to ask what has he done for the least of these? Let's see, he wants to give large tax breaks to the most wealthy when he knows that the state has one of the highest levels of children living in poverty who go to bed hungry and without health care. He knows that we do not have adequate care for the mentally ill in the state. He knows that we have an educational system that is underfunded to which all the poor children will have to go.

It is so easy to fight for the unborn in the name of Jesus, but it is sometimes very difficult to take care of the little children who are already here. Suffer the little children to come to me is what Jesus said. Hiett seems to be saying to these little children to get lost.

People were first called Christians because they acted like Christ. Can we really lay that title on Mr. Hiett?"

lib·er·al

No matter what a Democratic candidate says or does, no matter what record a Democrat runs on, the Bush Republicans and the GOP (greedy old party) disparagingly call all Democrats liberals. . . . as if this was a bad thing . . . . well, it's not.

When I was growing up and would ask my parents "what does this word mean?" they wouldn't tell me, instead they referred me to the dictionary, of all things, a parent directing a child to the dictionary!!!! So, according to Webster's Dictionary "liberal" means:

Main Entry: 1lib·er·al
Pronunciation: 'li-b(&-)r&l
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin liberalis suitable for a freeman, generous, from liber free; perhaps akin to Old English lEodan to grow, Greek eleutheros free
1 a : of, relating to, or based on the liberal arts <liberal education> b archaic : of or befitting a man of free birth
2 a : marked by generosity : OPENHANDED liberal giver> b : given or provided in a generous and openhanded way liberal meal> c : AMPLE, FULL

So, the next time someone tries to use "liberal" as a perjorative (if you don't know what it means, look it up) think ah, yes, liberal means free, generous, and open.

And I ask you, which do you prefer? generosity or greed? freedom or bondage? full or empty? openhanded or closefisted?

How about sharing some of your examples of liberal generosity?

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on Flash Point

Democratic candidate for Congress Bert Smith was the guest on KFOR-TV's Flash Point this morning. (Dr. David Hunter, the other Democratic candidate in the 5th District race for Congress was invited but was in surgery when the show was taped Thursday according to host Kevin Ogle.)

Bert was the Democratic nominee for the 5th in 2004 against Ernest Iscrook. He told viewers today that he is the only candidate in this race who takes the same view that Congressman John Murtha is promoting and that is to strategically redeploy our troops out of Iraq. Like Murtha, Bert is a combat veteran. And, Bert's son has served two tours in Iraq. More than you can say for any of the other candidates in this important race.

For more information about Bert's campaign visit his website at Bert Smith for Congress.

Synar BBQ

The crowd at the Mike Synar Memorial BBQ today at Rogers Point Park north of Catoosa was treated to great music (the little girl who sang Jesus Loves Me was adorable and the big girl who is Miss Grand Lake performed a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner), a slight breeze, good BBQ (especially those hot links), cold soft drinks and great political speeches! (No not from a stump but from a trailer decked out in red, white, and blue bunting . . . so does that make them stump speeches or trailer speeches?)

Thanks first of all to Larry and Jan Adair and Freida Wilcox and all of their volunteers for putting on an old-fashioned political rally. . . . the temperature and BBQ were not the only thing hot there today. . . . with local, county, district, and statewide candidates all gripping and grinning the political season is obviously heating up.

2nd District Congressman Dan Boren was the keynote speaker and a crowd favorite.

Governor Brad and First Lady Kim Henry took the "stage" and the Governor made a personal plea for votes from all attending the event. It was clear that he has the support of these Democrats and for good reason - take a look at his record! This Governor has made great progress for the state of Oklahoma and he deserves four more years.

State Treasurer Scott Meacham took to the stage and let the folks know that their money is in good hands with him. . . .the treasurer may be a first-time campaigner but he knows his way around finances and has done some amazing things with our money -- he deserves a full term as state treasurer. Meacham's wife Susan and son Evan were campaigning with him today.

Leah Henry was there also, campaigning for her dad, Brad Henry.

State Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland was joined at the event by her husband Jim East and son J.R. Kim is doing a fantastic job at the Insurance Department. . . . so --- you haven't heard about it recently --- that's a good thing! She has restored integrity to that office and has a very high standard of accountability and responsibility toward Oklahoma's consumers.

Cody Graves, former Corporation Commissioner, was there with his son Ben seeking another chance to protect Oklahoma consumers from the commission office. You should hear him talk about Bob Anthony . . . hey, have you seen any Anthony's stores recently? Nope. Well, there's a reason, just ask Cody, he has the details.

Lt. Governor candidate Pete Regan and his Yellow Dog Democrat wife Amy (in Democrat circles that's a real compliment) were accompanied by Pete's campaign chair --- former Governor George Nigh. Pete always introduces Amy as a Yellow Dog Democrat; they met at a Young Democrats meeting at UCO and have been working to elect Democrats ever since.

Some of the candidates were held up in a single lane traffic jam on the turnpike west of Tulsa and arrived a little later than expected and a few of them made a detour in Bristow to the Little Deep Fork Democrats Club Rally and Chili Cookoff.

Lt. Governor candidate Jari Askins was making the rounds of all the events today, she arrived in a helicopter! And her campaign kept the cold bottled water coming to participants --- thanks Jari for that; I saw more than a couple of folks feeling the heat and the H2O really helped.

Lt. Governor candidate Cal Hobson was one of those who took a short detour in Bristow so was represented by his wife Elaine on stage but he arrived in time to shake hands and ask for those precious votes.

Lori McMahan represented her husband State Auditor Jeff McMahan at the event. Lori is a 5th grade teacher --- we need more public servants like Jeff and Lori --- part of the Good Government Gang, they are great Democrats --- give Jeff four more years as an auditor with experience in state government (not partisan politics ie that balding guy who's running around the state running his mouth making up stuff about good people).

There was a pretty nice group from the 3rd District there today too . . . Mack Miller, Anita Norman, and Charlie and Juanita King. Charlie was a former chairman of the 2nd District before Keating redrew all the maps and messed up the state.

Tulsa County chair Patty Basnett was there as was Jason McIntosh. Jason was there with House candidate Steve Gallo.

It was nice to see folks from the southern end of the district there also (that's you Cerita!!!!) Rogers County, Mayes County and Adair County were well represented as was Cherokee County and Muskogee County (hi Isabel Baker!).

House candidates Kenny Weast and Chuck Hoskin were there looking for votes and support. These guys are running against each other in the primary; I didn't see the third candidate Henry Flanders but he may have been there.

Sean Burrage was there with his family.

Notice the trend here. . . . .Democrats in public with their families . . . . .Democrats with family values . . . . .Democrats who value their families . . . . .

Today was one of the first of many, many "speakings" scheduled throughout the summer. Be sure to check our ODP calendar often for an event coming near you. Our staff is eager to meet you this summer and to work with you to elect our great Democrats.

AFL-CIO

It was good to see friends this morning at the AFL-CIO COPE convention in OKC. Jim Curry and Myrna Burnam are strong, balanced leaders and I sincerely appreciate their efforts on behalf of working Oklahomans. Betty McElderry and I attended the opening ceremony this morning . . . . which by the way includes the Flag Salute and an invocation. I really like the way AFT member Lynn Green "invokes". I just get the idea that someone is listening to his very humble words and gracious admonitions. I was particularly glad to shake hands today with Tim O'Connor, Teresa Hill, Harry Ashbaugh, Ted Metscher, Carl Owen, Jesse Isbell, John Brown, John Gaines, Patty Bessen, Teresa McMillen and many, many others. And I was particularly thankful for the warm welcome afforded me as state party chairman. Thank YOU all for your encouragement! (After Betty and I left a parade of candidates spoke to the convention, seeking endorsements and encouragement for the upcoming elections. Maybe someone will post those endorsements at the appropriate time and place.)
"An Inconvenient Truth" for Oklahoma

Last night I watched Al Gore’s new movie, “An Inconvenient Truth.” There were only six vacant seats in the whole theatre! Thanks to our ODP staff Courtney, Lindsey, and Jason who organized a group of Yellow Dog Democrats to see the movie together. Now for my review:

Part personal journey, part slide show, it is a remarkable achievement. Riveting. Powerful. Important. Believe it or not, Al Gore is terrific. He is no longer “that” Al Gore. Listening to “that” Al Gore for two minutes was painful. Listening to “this” Al Gore for two hours is refreshing and inspiring. This Al Gore is clearly a liberated man, a man who has found his balance and his passion. A man who uses his head and speaks from his heart. Forget what you may have thought about Al Gore, “An Inconvenient Truth” is a movie everyone needs to see. And that includes Oklahoma’s senior Senator, James Inhofe.

After all Senator Inhofe, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, is in the movie. Mixed amid Gore’s forceful presentation that explains the toll global warming is taking on our planet, there’s Jim on the big screen, spewing his usual mindless global warming claptrap. Our Jim, who famously said, “Global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetuated on the American people.”

It should be no surprise that “An Inconvenient Truth” proves Inhofe spectacularly wrong about global warming and further solidifies his position as one of the leading nuts in the United States Congress. Gore’s measured and convincing argument is so powerful that Inhofe is exposed for the fraud that he is within just a few seconds.

Which brings me to my point. Jim Inhofe needs to be called out for his consistently indefensible statements, starting with global warming. Jim Inhofe needs to watch this movie. Not that it will change him. Not that he will finally find wisdom, or make us proud. No, Jim Inhofe needs to watch this movie so he can see how he and others like him are destroying our planet. So he can see how damaging ignorance and power, in combination, can be. So he can see how tragically misguided he has been as a lawmaker.

Inhofe won’t do it on his own, so let’s send him some encouragement. Let’s bombard him with demands to see “An Inconvenient Truth” and challenge him to conduct a thorough, non-partisan Congressional hearing on global warming. And, if he doesn’t, let’s demand that he provide us a written response, an open letter to the children of Oklahoma, including his own grandchildren, explaining why he thinks he shouldn’t. Write your demand letter and send it to:

The Honorable James M. Inhofe
United States Senate
453 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-3603

Or contact him via:
FAX: 202.228.0380
E-Mail (through his Senate website): http://inhofe.senate.gov
Phone: 202.224.4721

The inconvenient truth is that global warming is real and endangers our Earth. Now, let’s make life in Jim Inhofe’s world uncomfortable. It’s only fair that we shame him – Jim Inhofe has been embarrassing the people of Oklahoma for years.

Don't Be Ashamed

Yesterday, while in Jackson County, Lindsey and I had a great conversation with the activists there. We were there to do a training, to try to get more Democrats involved at the precinct level. While talking about recruiting volunteers, the women said that lately the Democrats in the county were ashamed to let their neighbors know they were Democrats.

Why have we let the Republicans create an atmosphere where we are afraid to voice our opinions and share our views?

We can’t let them win without a fight anymore.

We can be proud to be Democrats.

Sweet Pea Abernathy
told us of the Democrats who were changing their registration to a supposedly more acceptable “R.” Jane Oden told us about some of her friends, who were so fed up with both parties that they didn’t want to identify with either. We talked about how Republican politicians were their own worst enemy right now, but that people like Jane’s friends were looking for a positive message, not just a party to vote against.

As Democrats, we don’t believe in the politics of distraction. As Democrats, we focus on the issues that face Americans and Oklahomans every single day: healthcare, education and a living wage. As Democrats, we care about people. As Mary Ann Appleby said yesterday, “the Democrats have always been for the downtrodden.”

And we shouldn’t be ashamed of that. We have always fought for the underdog, and now is not the time to stop.

Barack Obama agrees, and says it much more eloquently below:

“The time for our party's identity crisis is over. Don't let anyone tell you we don't know what we stand for and don't doubt it yourselves. We know who we are. And in the end, we know that it isn't enough to just say that you've had enough.

So let it be said that we are the party of opportunity. That in a global economy that's more connected and more competitive - we are the party that will guarantee every American an affordable, world-class, top-notch, life-long education - from early childhood to high school, from college to on-the-job training.

Let it be said that we are the party of affordable, accessible health care for all Americans. The party that won't make Americans choose between a health care plan that bankrupts the government and one that bankrupts families. The party that won't just throw a few tax breaks at families who can't afford their insurance, but modernizes our health care system and gives every family a chance to buy insurance at a price they can afford.

Let it be said that we are the party of an energy independent America. The party that's not bought and paid for by the oil companies. The party that will harness homegrown, alternative fuels and spur the production of fuel-efficient, hybrid cars to break our dependence on the world's most dangerous regimes.

Let it be said that we will conduct a smart foreign policy that battles the forces of terrorism and fundamentalism wherever they may exist by matching the might of our military with the power of our diplomacy and the strength of our alliances. And when we do go to war, let us always be honest with the American people about why we are there and how we will win.

And let it be said that we are the party of open, honest government that doesn't peddle the agenda of whichever lobbyist or special interest can write the biggest check. The party who believes that in this democracy, influence and access should begin and end with the power of the ballot.

If we do all this, if we can be trusted to lead, this will not be a Democratic Agenda, it will be an American agenda. Because in the end, we may be proud Democrats, but we are prouder Americans. We're tired of being divided, tired of running into ideological walls and partisan roadblocks, tired of appeals to our worst instincts and greatest fears.”

(emphasis mine)
Bush Republicans Pander to Their Base

Over the last 24 hours, Congressional Republicans have made very clear their real agenda for the American people. Congressional Republicans are running away from tough decisions and instead are desperately pandering to their base to improve their political standing in November. After refusing to raise the minimum wage after nearly a decade, Senate Republicans again thwarted efforts to raise the economic standing of millions of Americans who live below or near the poverty line. In the last 24 hours, House Republicans also abandoned efforts to renew the Voting Rights Act, even after many of them embraced the extension less than a month ago on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

Let's be clear, in 24 hours we saw everything we need to know about the real Republican agenda and just how out of step they are with America's values. Republicans in Washington have resorted to partisan political games to deny an increase in the minimum wage that would have directly helped millions of hard working American families. Congressional Republicans have no real agenda or ideas to offer America. Now they are holding the Voting Rights Act hostage, refusing to ensure the right to vote and have that vote counted for every American, so that they can pander to the extremists in their party. This Republican agenda of desperate political tricks represents a real threat to America's values. Democrats offer America a new direction.

P.S. I like panda bears and I loathe pandering politicians. If the Republicans have their way, Democrats, like the magnificent panda bear, will be an endangered species. No more pandering!
Sullivan's 65% Solution Fails the Test

A report released today by the Citizens Policy Center raises serious concerns about a ballot initiative to keep at least 65 percent of public school money in the classroom.

The report, published by the Citizens Policy Center, a non-partisan Oklahoma policy organization, says there is no evidence to prove that forcing schools to put 65 percent of funds in classrooms has any positive effects on student achievement.

“If Oklahomans are looking for a mandatory spending plan for schools as an accountability measure there are better research-based approaches,” the report states. “Although improving student achievement and public schools is vitally important, this is a one-size-fits-all mandate on our school districts and conflicts with the notion of local control.”

The CPC study, “Why the 65% Solution is No Solution for Oklahoma,” says that any real accountability solutions for schools must recognize that student success comes from a range of programs and services in a community and not solely from classroom instruction.

“We see this ballot initiative as a marketing gimmick with little relevance to the success of students or the quality of instruction in our classrooms,” said Roy Peters, CPC board chairman. “We believe the people of Oklahoma want to address education reform in proven ways that will make a real difference for students. Our research says the mandate would do more harm than good.”

Student success is determined by a number of factors, including factors that would be not be included under the school-funding mandate, according to the study. “Our research confirms that school counselors, principals and teacher training directly impact student achievement,” Peters explained. “These areas would not be included in the 65 percent funding mandate.”

Agreeing on a definition of “classroom instruction” is another problem with the ballot initiative. Under the Oklahoma ballot initiative, classroom expenses would not include transportation, cafeteria, utility, maintenance, nursing and administrative costs.

School Matters, a service of Standard and Poor’s, the nationally recognized bonding firm, analyzed district level spending and student achievement data from nine states and found that “student performance does not noticeably or consistently increase at 65 percent or any other percentage spent on instruction.”

Just last week, supporters delivered eleven boxes of petitions to Secretary of State Susan Savage’s office for counting and validation. The initiative petition drive is part of a national effort from an organization called First Class Education.

Copies of the report are available at www.citizenspolicycenter.org.

Checklist for Change

Yesterday was a big day for Democrats, for women and for families. Our nine US Senators launched a new initiative....Democratic Women for Change. They've made a list, checked it twice, and they've found who's naughty or nice.....and I bet you know who's on the nice list!!! (Hint: it's not the Bush Republicans.) As women they know that to get things done you start with making a list. As US Senators they know that someone has to be accountable and responsible for getting things done on the list. They have pledged to get things done for America, for families, for women. Click here to check out their list and learn more about the initiative. The Senators took their show on the road last night on Larry King Live. To read the transcript of their interview click here.

Mr. Bush's Wrong Direction

Want to tell your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and anyone else who will listen just how the Bush Administration and the Republican Majority in Congress have taken the country in the wrong direction for Americans and their families?

Consider this. . .

Rising Health Care Costs

Under the Bush Administration and the Republican Majority in Congress, the cost of family health insurance has risen more than 70%, or an average of $4,500 per family, and 6 million more Americans are uninsured. Meanwhile, the Majority has enacted a confusing and costly prescription drug benefit that prohibits Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices, has cut funding for medical research, and has prohibitied federal funding of a real stem cell research program.

Rising Energy Prices

Gas prices have nearly doubled and exeed $3,00 per gallon in many places, and dependence on foreign oil increased to 60%. Meanwhile, the REpublican Majority has blocked efforts to ban price gouging, rewarded oil and gas companies with billions in new subsidies at a time of record profits, and opposed investments in alternative fuels and energy efficient technology.

Rising Economic Insecurity

Real family income has fallen every year of the Bus Administration, while CEO compensation has soared. Meanwhile, the Majority has blocked any increase in the minimuy wage for 7.5 million workers, while rpoviding billions in corporate tax subsidies that encourage sending jobs overseas.

Rising Deficits and Debt

The Majority has turneda projected $5.6 trillion budget surplus into a $3.2 trillion budget deficit and put us on course to double our national debt to nearly $12 trillion by 2011.

Rising College Costs

Tuition has increased by $2,000 (57%) at public universitites ad by $5,000 (32%) at private universities since the 2000-2001 school year. Meanwhile, the Majority has cut $12 billion from college student aid, increasing the costs of loans; has frozen Pell Grants for higher education; and has failed to extend the college tuition tax deduction.

Rising Retirement Insecurity

The Majority has fought to privatize Social Security, which would have cut benefits for the middle class and added trillions to our debt, and failed to protect workers' pensions while CEOs receive hundred-million dollar retirement packages.

VOLUNTEERS

We are growing our volunteer base here at the Oklahoma Democratic Party and have opportunities available to help us elect Democrats every day. Whether it's answering phones, making phone calls to Democrats, stuffing envelopes, knocking on doors, talking to candidates and activists, or doing data entry, there is work to do every day. Many of our volunteers work an afternoon or morning every week; some work only a couple of hours a week, while others have signed up for special projects.

If you have not yet signed up to volunteer with us or with one of the candidate campaigns please do so today by emailing Lindsey Cox at lindseycox@okdemocrats.org.

Lindsey and Courtney Ruark, one of our DNC Partnership Project staff, are working with our volunteers and interns.

These volunteers have helped us in the office the last couple of weeks:

Don't forget the CD 2 Mike Synar Memorial BBQ on Saturday at Rogers Point Park, Catoosa. Featured guest speakers are CD2 Congressman Dan Boren and Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry.

Event organizer former Speaker of the House Larry Adair told me yesterday they are expecting about 300 people for the noon to 3:30 p.m. event. Sounds like a great time for Democratic fellowship and fun. Don't miss it. This is an old fashioned all-you-can-eat BBQ and political speakin' fundraiser....$15 sounds like a good deal to me! I posted a map to the event on an earlier post here at OK Blue Notes.

SD 16

A 3-way contest for the Democratic nomination in SD 16 is heating up in the Norman area. The seat, being vacated by term-limited Senator Cal Hobson, is drawing attention statewide as three men vie for the opportunity to face a Republican in November.

In alphabetical order, the candidates are:

All three have websites. Click on their name above and read about their views for the district.

If you have a story to share about one of the candidates, please post it as a comment on this thread.

A Trojan Horse Called TABOR

The disastrous so-called Tax Payers Bill of Rights (TABOR) initiative petition campaign challenge is winding down and if all goes as expected it will go the way of its companion eminent domain petition.

In a 6-3 opinion yesterday the state's Supreme Court struck down an initiative petition to protect landowners in eminent domain actions, saying it violates the constitution because it deals with more than one subject.

Both petitions were circulated by Oklahomans in Action. We've heard stories of out-of-state felons serving as petition circulators and that thousands of the signatures gathered were unverifiable --- which should sink this effort to destroy our state.

The Alliance for Oklahoma's Future is the watchdog for this "bill of goods" and if they are successful in stopping TABOR from being on the November ballot Oklahoma we will all be grateful.

Read more about this trojan horse and the Alliance read this at the Progressive States Network.

Oklahoma's Citizens Policy Center is also doing work to stop TABOR.
Congratulations to Roger Ballenger and the Senate Democrats

Democratic candidate for Senate District 8 Roger Ballenger won't have a Republican challenger after all.

Ballenger, an Okmulgee County commissioner, will represent state Senate District 8 in the regular session of the Legislature that begins in February after Jeremy Moore, a Beggs Republican, withdrew from the race for the District 8 seat, leaving Ballenger as the only candidate.

The seat is being vacated through term-limits by Senator Frank Shurden who is now running for the Democratic nomination for State Labor Commissioner.

The seat is one of seven "open" Democratic seats. The other six are
  • SD 2 (Mayes* and Rogers* counties);
  • SD 10 (Kay*, Osage*, Pawnee, Payne*, Tulsa*);
  • SD 12 (Creek*, Okfuskee);
  • SD 16 (Cleveland*, McClain*);
  • SD 26 (Beckham*, Caddo*, Greer*, Jackson*, Kiowa, Tillman, Washita)
  • SD 46 (Oklahoma*)

4th of July

Fireworks, watermelon, lightning bugs, mosquitoes, politicians, flags, parades, volleyball, homemade ice cream, swimming pools, baseball, the Boston Pops. . . .what's going on in your community to celebrate Freedom on the 4th of July?
WEESE x 2

I wrote about Rae and Dennis Weese when they filed for office on their anniversary this month. Today Randy Krehbiel wrote this story for the Tulsa World that ran on page 1:

The self-described Yellow Dog Democrats file for office after 30 years of marriage.

Thirty wedding anniversaries later, coming up with something different for No. 31 can be a stretch.

Even so, as anniversary dates go, filing for public office together must be darn near unique.

Dennis and Rae Weese of Broken Arrow celebrated 31 years of wedded bliss on June 7 with dinner and a movie, and by filing for the Legislature.

Committed Democrats marooned amid some of Oklahoma's most Republican neighborhoods, the Weeses know the odds are against them. But, they say, they just couldn't stand to see GOP walkovers in their House and Senate legislative districts.

"We just don't care for uncontested elections," said Rae Weese.

So Dennis, a 59-year-old auto worker, filed for the Senate District 36 seat being vacated by Scott Pruitt, and Rae, 52, became the only opposition to Republican incumbent John Trebilcock in House District 98.

"We had been talking about how we weren't happy with our legislators and that we hoped some Democrat with recognition would step up to the plate," said Dennis Weese. "Well, they didn't. And it ate on us so much we just decided to file."

Two Republicans, Joe Lester and Bill Brown, have filed in District 36. Weese said both have impressive resumes, but he thinks his and his wife's background should be more appealing to the average voter.

"Those two gentlemen have served on boards controlling some important organizations. One of them, Joe Lester, has been on the board of the Red Cross. Rae and I, on the other hand, are on a Red Cross disaster team. We were at Camp Gruber when the first busload of people displaced by Hurricane Katrina arrived. I personally was in charge of (taking care of) 200 people who were dirty and hungry and tired."

Rae was in charge of women with special needs at the camp.

Because neither Weese has a primary opponent, the Weeses have plenty of time to work their neighborhoods. Most of that work is going to have to be sweat equity because they don't have a campaign fund. Dennis said he plans to follow in the footsteps -- or at least the tread marks -- of Virgil Cooper, the retired school administrator who upset incumbent Second District Congressman Mike Synar in the 1994 Democratic primary.

"He had a pickup that he drove around," said Weese. "Well, I have a yellow pickup with 'Yellow Dog' license plate on it."

Indeed, the Weeses are the proverbial Yellow Dog Democrats, loyal to the last. Although neither has run for public office before, both were members of Oklahoma's delegation to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Their son Luke is a party campaign operative working for U.S. Fifth District candidate David Hunter.

Rae is president of Heart of the Party -- the Tulsa County chapter of the Oklahoma Federation of Democratic Women -- and although they haven't raised any campaign money for themselves, they have helped raise plenty for other Democratic candidates. But, they say they hope money isn't everything in politics.

"I really feel like the key will be talking to people, walking the neighborhoods and knocking on doors," Rae said.

"Broken Arrow is somewhat conservative, but we've lived here a long time. We're Broken Arrow people."

Today's Talking Points

Key Point: After so many years in Iraq, and with so many grim milestones along the way, the Bush Administration's political rhetoric is not an acceptable substitute for a substantive strategy. It is time for a real change and a real plan to make 2006 a year of significant transition.

Iraq

In the fourth year of the war in Iraq, the White House is still pushing partisan political rhetoric in place of a plan.

Our national security is too important and our troops' sacrifice too great to allow this White House to continue to drift in Iraq without trying to change course.

It is time for a serious and thoughtful discussion about a real plan for our future in Iraq.

Iran

After so many mistakes in Iraq, it is clear the Congress must act to prevent the same mistakes from happening with Iran.

Immigration

America's immigration system is broken, and its collapse is a national security risk. Unfortunately, Bush Republicans are more interested in protecting their party than in solving this crisis.

Energy

Big Oil thinks $3 oil is what's best for America, and the Bush Administration thinks Big Oil is what's best for the American people.

The Bush Administration sold out America's energy policies to Big Oil, and now the American people are paying the price at the gas pump.

It is time for a new direction. The Democratic Clean EDGE Act will break the grip of the oil companies and put America on the path to energy independence.
Political Ads

I've seen them, you've seen them, we've all seen them --- political ads. Some are funny, some are mean-spirited, many are pathetic and disingenous.

Someone called me today to complain about Todd Hiett's promise that "souls will be saved" if he is elected Lt. Governor. How disgsusting. This gentleman told me that his soul was already saved and it sure had nothing to do with Todd Hiett. The audacity of some politicians to claim such power!

Mack Miller, who serves as the CD3 Chairman for the ODP, recently published this opinion piece in all three of his newspapers. And unless you subscribe to The Dewey County Record, The Canton Times, or The Okeene Record you probably missed it. So I thought I'd reprint it here and let you all comment on the topic of political ads of the worst kind.

From The Backroom...
By Mack Miller

I must admit, I am sick of the political ads already, even before anyone has filed. Denise Bode and Todd Hiett have already turned me off on political TV ads.

Denise Bode’s ads stinks. Hey, that is one of the nicer things I have heard anyone say about her ads. Others have called them hypocrisy.

Denise’s TV ad starts out with a stained glass church window of Jesus then shows Denise teaching a Bible lesson. The ad goes on to talk about her faith and her belief in God, etc.

Huh? Did I miss something? Is Denise Bode running for a church position? Quick! Someone explain to her there IS a separation of Church and State in this country. Our Founding Fathers left England because they were not allowed to worship God as they each saw fit. They came to this country and founded this great nation on this principle - that each man and woman could worship God as we each saw fit and no government official could take this right away from us.

It is apparent that Denise Bode failed to understand her history lesson on this. Denise, please figure out where you are going because, by your TV ads, you are headed in the wrong direction to be running for a political office!
My only regret is that I am not in the 5th District so I could vote AGAINST Denise Bode!

Todd Hiett’s TV ads almost make you laugh. Ever see a drugstore cowboy? Well, just watch Todd’s ads and you will see the prettiest drugstore cowboy ever I did see. He looks so pretty, he almost needs a dress on.

Todd is walking along with his brand new jeans and new shirt on. Oh yeah, he has that fancy cowboy hat on also. Oh, Yuck, those awful yellow cowboy boots. You can tell Todd Hiett has never seen a cow lot.

Todd isn’t really a cowboy. He just found the boots.

Todd Hiett has stated publicly he was going to run for 4 offices. He was first going to run for Corporation Commissioner. Nope. Couldn’t get elected.

He was going to run for State Treasurer. Nope. Couldn’t get elected.

He was going to run for Governor. Well, Brad Henry’s approval rating is at 70% or more. Nope. Couldn’t be elected.

Lieutenant Governor Mary Fallin announced she was going to run for the 5th District Congressional Seat. Todd had an idea. He’d run for Lieutenant Governor. But he has a problem. He has two opponents, probably, in the Republican Primary. Ooops! Todd won’t be elected.

Poor Todd. The teachers remembered the pay raise they were supposed to get last time. The $1,200 pay raise never got to them. What happened?

King of the House, King Todd, insisted the teacher pay raise go thru the formula. Some career teachers got a $200 increase and some didn’t get anything. Todd can’t make up his mind on the teacher pay issue this year either. He keeps trying to ride the fence.

Todd Hiett has held up House Bills until the author’s name was struck and his name or one of his buddies’ names inserted as the author.

Todd Hiett is the first Speaker of the House accused by lawmakers and lobbyists alike of running a `pay to play’ scheme. Reportedly, they either had to make a donation to Todd’s election campaign or the campaign of one of his buddies in order to get their bill heard on the House Floor..

Todd Hiett reportedly made the opening session of the House this year then stayed in his office after that - raising money for his election campaign. After fed up with Todd not being on the House Floor, the Republican House members were reported to have gone into caucus for over 2 hours. When they came out, King Todd went to his place on the House Floor. He remained there until the House gallery was packed with teachers and the House was prepared to vote on the teacher pay raise. King Todd then walked off the House Floor.
But, `if’ King Todd gets through the Republican Primary for Lieutenant Governor (the odds of this aren’t likely), I WILL get a chance to vote AGAINST him! And I WILL!!!

A BUSY WEEK
This should be a week full of chances to persuade voters to "stamp the Rooster" this fall. My Monday 7:35 am radio debate on KTOK went well-this time the GOP brought in Senator Glen Coffee to offer their side. He pointed out he was one of my students at Boys State years ago, and I said yes, our relationship was like the one in "Star Wars" between Obi-wan and Annakin Skywalker (Darth Vader for the one or two people not familiar with the last three movies)...later in the week there will be the Governor's gala, Jazz in June, county meetings, and of course lots of phone calls delivering our message. Lisa Pryor and I will probably split up the events to cover the most turf, but hopefully I will see some of our faithful readers on the trail...
RAISE Oklahoma

Watch your local news channels today for coverage of the RAISE Oklahoma rally at the state capitol this morning.

Campaign organizer Linda Gray Murphy was emcee for the event. Speakers included Senator Cal Hobson, Senator Debbe Leftwich, Representative Jari Askins, and Representative Richard Morrissette.

I saw these other supporters:UAW representative Judy Calhoun; Jim
Huff, Oklahoma Chapter of Americans for Separation of Church and State; Reverend Bruce Prescott, Mainstream Baptists; Pastor George Young, Holy Temple Baptist Church; Deacon John Morris, St. John the Baptist Parish; Rex Friend, Attorney, Quaker and Community Activist; Pam Maisano, Legislative Liaison for Oklahoma Conference of Churches; Shirley Cox, Director of Social Action for Catholic Charities; Reverend Scott Keneda, Wesley United Methodist Church; and Rabbi Barry Cohen, Temple B’nai Israel.

I also saw the following candidates there: Hal Spake, CD4; Christine Byrd, HD 97; Casey Davis HD 88; Rhonda Rudd, SD 46; and Will Andrews, SD 22.

Each of the speakers emphasized that the campaign to raise the minimum wage IS a MORAL ISSUE. For more information about the campaign go to www.raiseoklahoma.org.

Three for One in Twenty-Six

Three Democrats are vying for the Democratic nomination in Senate District 26 being vacated by long-time Senator Gilmer Capps who is term-limited after 35 years of service. I grew up out in this district so have long considered Capps "my senator" so I have a special interest in who will replace him. The primary election is July 25th.

The candidates include Tom Ivester, Larry Peck and Wayne Walters. Each bring unique qualifications to the race. Each candidate has strong ties to the agriculture community. Ivester is an attorney and a veteran. Peck is an ag teacher and magazine publisher from Sentinel. Walters is a businessman and educator from Canute. Check out their campaign websites, listen to them on your doorstep, and report back here which candidate is your favorite and why.

Mayes County Democrats Celebrate Flag Day

Good Democrats from Mayes County gathered at the American Legion in Pryor yesterday to celebrate Flag Day and hear Attorney General Drew Edmondson and host of other statewide and local candidates. Edmondson is not only the best AG in the country he's an inspirational speaker. I particularly liked his story about being confirmed into his church at age 12. Seems he was given a Bible that had the words of Jesus in red. Now, he said, I paid a lot more attention to those words. In fact, he took them to heart and has lived his life accordingly since then......difference between him and others is he doesn't buy zillions of dollars of tv commercials to tell everybody what a great Christian he is.....he quietly lives out his faith....taking care of the "least of these" and being a good steward of our resources....in fact he said as long as he's AG he will fight to protect the water of NE Oklahoma from out of state corporate polluters because it's the right thing to do.

Rep. Jari Askins and Pete Regan both asked for votes. I really liked what Jari said about the difference in philosophy between her and a Republican....when it comes to funding nutrition centers for our state's senior citizens, the Republicans believe that's "pork barrel" and she frankly knows that nutrition centers in rural areas is more like basic "pork n beans" for seniors who need these centers for nutrition assistance. Fighting for seniors is a priority for Jari.

And I like how Pete asks voters for campaign contributions...."I have all the money I need for this campaign, the problem is that some of it is still in your pocket," he says.....One of the side benefits of these campaign events is meeting the great young Democrats who travel with the candidates....they significantly lower the average age of attendees at these events and hold great promise for the future of our state.

Senator Frank Shurden and former Representative Lloyd Fields were both in Pryor stumping for the opportunity to put Brenda Reneau out of business. Fields has visited more than 70 of the 77 counties in the state since announcing his candidates for State Labor Commissioner. Shurden has served the state for the better part of three decades. Whoever wins this primary undoubtedly will be the one to stand up for our state's workers for the next four years so make sure you shake hands with both of these guys.

Former Corporation Commissioner Cody Graves, who is seeking to oust Bob Anthony, made an eloquent speech to the crowd. He IS the Democratic nominee in this important race. Graves said a lot of folks don't know much about the Corporation Commission, but they should understand that if you ever turn on a light or put gas in your car, you are impacted by the work of the Commission. Don't forget Cody Graves! He will be a strong and truthful leader at the Commission.

Rep. Ben Sherrer was emcee for the event. He's doing such a great job up there in Mayes County he did not draw an opponent so will return to the state capitol next year.

Senator Mary Easley spoke about faith, family, and the flag. She paid special tribute to our soldiers and veterans. And, she asked for four more years! And asking for the opportunity the serve in the State Senate was Sean Burrage who is running to replace term-limited Senator Stratton Taylor is District 2. Burrage is a bright young attorney with fabulous Democratic credentials....his sons are named Truman and Carter! Kidding aside, he is a rising star and Oklahoma needs him in the State Senate. Our party needs him in the State Senate.

Chuck Hoskin
and Kenny Weast are vying for a House seat being vacated by Joe Eddins. Hoskin is a long-time school administrator and has legislative service with the Cherokee Nation. Weast is an energetic young businessman and mayor of Chelsea. This is another one of those races where I wish we had two spots open so we could put both of them up for office.

Speaking of the House, former House Speaker Larry Adair and his wife Jan were there. He now serves as Congressional District 2 Chairman for the ODP. CD2 vicechair Freda Wilcox was also there. They are hosting the Mike Synar BBQ in Claremore next Saturday and they are expecting about 200 people.

Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland
wasn't there but she did send representatives. I go to a lot of these events, and I've seen Holland at nearly every one. No one can doubt her willingness to work or to proclaim that she is a Democrat. She is a consummate professional and a great campaigner. I hope you'll have the opportunity to hear her this summer; if not, check out her credentials at http://hollandforoklahoma.com/.

Thanks to Mayes County Democratic Party Chairman Roger Johnson for another great Mayes County Flag Day celebration. Special thanks also to these event sponsors: Oscar and Amy Sparks, George Jolly, Jack Spurlock, Darrell Moore, Blaine Jones, Sanders & Sandra Mitchell, Jim Bob Hindrickson, Charles and Joybelle Curtsinger, Bill Lingren, Kenny Weast, Chuck Hoskin, John Wilkerson, Kevin Whiteside, and Alva Martin.

Budget Battle

(My neighbor Keith Gaddie wrote this over at his blog SoonerPolitics.com. Others are sounding off on this issue so thought it would make a good weekend blog....so who won?)

WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE BIPARTISAN BEETLE BOTTLE BUDGET BATTLE BOONDOGGLE

The budget battle is over, and everyone won.

Well, not exactly.

Individual taxpayers in Oklahoma will enjoy a cut in the state income tax rate, an increase in the standard deduction, and an elimination of the inheritance tax, all in sum a projected cut in tax obligations of $6 billion over ten years. The state also committed real monies to repair our crumbling road and bridge infrastructure, thereby fulfilling the latent dreams of every county commissioner to be able to pour concrete where there are votes. And, state employee salaries get hiked 5% and the teachers get a raise and the OTRS will finally be fully funded.

So who won?

Well, that’s not so clear. No one decisively lost, but the status of winner and is relative to what one had to give up in the process. Mike Morgan and the Senate Democrats can claim a win, for certain. One Senate Democrat related to me, at the end of regular session, that “the difference between Hiett’s proposal [a 2-point tax cut] and the deal we thought we had is the difference between raises and no raises” for state employees. Morgan and the Democrats get to claim credit for creating the things Democrats run on -- Roads, Schools, [public] Jobs – and also for defending the little man by cutting his taxes and improving his services. In sum, they did what was needed to activate their base.

Republicans get to win in general. Speaker Hiett does get to claim another tax cut, but as more than one Republican insider observed, “he caved.” The Speaker / Lieutenant Governor Aspirant sought even more severe tax cuts and less spending, and got the deal he could have had during regular session. Morgan and Hiett played chicken, and Morgan didn’t veer off the line. How this gets played in the coming primary has yet to be determined, but taking half a loaf after playing chicken can also be viewed as smart negotiation and building leverage.

As always, the governor won, because he got what he had agreed to. Also, Mr. Henry, of whom I admit to be a fan, gets the best of both worlds. He served Democratic constituencies by getting to sign legislation protecting core Democratic interests, and also gets to sit in the middle of the table, signing tax cuts and handing out pens while all the other political players who covet his chair look on. Mr. Henry’s Zen political quality has served him well, as he watches other players exhaust themselves and navigates a happy center.

Glenn Coffee, the Republican leader in the Senate, is left in the unfortunate position of trying to spoil the party by ascribing blame for the situation. Coffee, in his statement to the press, observes that “Thankfully Senate Democrats have backed down from their obstructionism that brought us to the brink of a government shutdown. If Republicans ran the State Senate, the state budget would have been completed on time and this costly special session would not have been necessary." And he decries the spending increases in the budget. Sadly for the Republican effort to seize the Senate majority, Democrats did not cause government to shut down, so an entire campaign strategy based on demonizing the dozen unaccountable, term-limited Democrats of the Senate will have to go on the shelf. Bernest Cain and Mike Morgan and Cal Hobson do not get to become active issues in state senate contests.

Mr. Coffee is both intelligent and responsible. But, unfortunately, in a heady environment of lower taxes and flush revenue, his words only ring true for the most conservative of conservatives. Oklahomans, when polled, wanted the spending approved by the legislature. They also know that their neighbors are those public employees and teachers who received those [rare] public pay raises, and they make use of the services provided by those agencies. They just didn’t want to pay more taxes to get them.

And the voters got everything they wanted. Now let's hope that we have not defied the Wildcatter's Prayer: "Oh Lord, Please Give Me One More Boom And I Promise Not To Piss It Away."

A poster of this Norman Rockwell piece "The Golden Rule" hung in my classroom for years. Today it's in my office at the ODP. It reminds me of our inclusive party which at its core adheres to this great credo "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

What can be more American than Norman Rockwell? What can be more spiritual than the Golden Rule?

The actual piece is a giant mosaic that hangs at the United Nations. A mosaic is made up of thousands of tiny tiles that when put together create a beautiful piece of art. Each of us is one of those tiles and when we work together toward our common goals we create opportunity for all.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean often refers to the Golden Rule when asked "what do Democrats believe? what do Democrats stand for?" He points out that this great principle crosses all of the great traditions of faith and is a core value of our party.

Quietly put your faith in action, work together with other Democrats to make life better for Oklahoma and for America. Do unto others......

BIG EVENT IN WAGONER
Man alive, to they know how to put on a dinner in Wagoner. ..500 people present, and the Governor and First Lady as the headliners. Hats off to Sam Holman and the crew for a real solid event. I enjoyed visiting with the family of Wade Rousselot, the fantastic state rep for the area. It is no wonder he didn't draw an opponent. The hot race for DA there will insure a big turnout for the primary...just a hint for the statewide candidates as to an area they should focus on for July!
Save the Date!

Political Slogans

To a large degree politics is the art of communicating. In today's political campaigns it is communicating in sound bytes and on bumper stickers....so start collecting the slogans (and putting those bumper stickers on your car)....at the event in Wagoner last night I picked up these slogans from our Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor:

  • Jari Askins: Deep Roots, Deep Belief in Oklahoma
  • Cal Hobson: Cal Listens to You!
  • Pete Regan: A New Generation of Leadership

And for State Labor Commissioner:

  • Frank Shurden: A Real Champion for Real People
  • Lloyd Fields: A Working Labor Commissioner for a Change!

Please comment with the slogans from your favorite current Democratic candidates.

Lisa, Ben and I attended a sellout Legislative Appreciation Dinner in Wagoner Thursday night. The big talk was the agreement hammered out earlier that day on the state budget. Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan, House Leader Jari Askins and House Caucus Chair Danny Morgan were present, looking like they'd just won the lottery. Brad and Kim Henry highlighted the event, along with Sandy Garrett and lots of candidates. The Wagoner County Party put on another great event, and they should have a strong Democratic turnout in November.

Bumper Stickers

One of my favorites is "You Voted for Bush, How Embarrassing."

And then there's this one "Freedom not Fear, Vote Democrat."

What are your favorites?

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Last night I attended a Lt. Governor’s forum hosted by the Tulsa Heart of the Party Chapter at the Tulsa Public Library. Candidates Jari Askins and Cal Hobson joined Coleman Davis (representing Pete Regan) in a two hour question and answer session. The theme of the night was responsibility and leadership. The Lt. Gov’s race is the most intriguing race for Oklahoma Democrats in 2006. Each candidate is excellent, well qualified and would make a great leader for our state. Each makes me proud to be a Democrat because they talk about the right things – education, health care, public safety and infrastructure development. They are committed to investing in our youth, investing in our working families and investing in projects – scientific centers, new jobs -- that will make Oklahoma better for all its citizens, not just the handful with hundred of thousands of dollars. Cal has 28 years experience in the state legislature. Jari has12 years experience to go along with her tenure as a judge. Pete has guided the State Senate Pac and has worked in DC. This makes them all viable candidates and appealing to Oklahoma Democrats. The most important thing is that we make sure that neither Todd Hiett nor Scott Pruitt assumes this critical position in our state government. In a close state senate, the Lt. Governor becomes an integral part of partisan legislative agendas. I commend Rae Weese and the members of the Tulsa Heart of the Party for allowing these candidates the time and forum to speak to Oklahoma voters.

Still Waiting

Key Point: After positive developments in Iraq, the American people are still waiting to hear when Iraq will be safe enough for our troops to leave and for President Bush to announce his plans to visit again.

Iraq

All Americans are pleased with positive developments in Iraq. Now they are waiting to see the results.

The American people are confused. President Bush's commanders keep hinting at withdrawing troops, but as recently as last month the president sent in more troops into Iraq.

Even after his trip to Baghdad, the president still has not told the American people the remaining political, military, and economic objectives that must be met in order for success in Iraq.

The president must put aside political theater and tell the American people his plan to make 2006 a year of transition, so that America can leave Iraq and address the new and growing threats around the world.

June 14 Flag Day

Many of you have served under this flag.
School children salute this flag as they recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
This flag flies in front of public buildings, homes, banks, car lots, movie theatres.
This flag does NOT belong to one political party or the other and to claim it as such defames the meaning and majesty of the flag. This is the symbol that unites Americans. Long may it wave.

Do you have a favorite flag story? If so, share it with us.

Noble County Democrats held a successful barbecue May 25 at the Noble County Fairgrounds in Perry. Over a hundred Democrats (and a few friendly Republicans) dropped by in support of this fundraiser. Rose Ann and I helped out a bit, including donation of the meat, but these folks know what they're doing! They set a great example for other county party organizations.

We have some strong local Democratic candidates in Noble County, and their success in November will help our statewide candidates too. The Central Committee is recruiting more precinct officers to prepare for the fall campaign. They have chairs in eleven of their sixteen precincts, and plan on expanding those teams over the summer.

Congratulations to the Noble County Central Committee and local Democrats for a good project. Keep up the good work!

Best,
Walt

Building Community through the ODP

Yesterday the ODP hosted the Community Forum group for lunch followed by the ODP Faith Outreach Committee in the evening. Tonight the Oklahoma County Democratic Party is meeting here. Two candidate forums are going on this evening; one in Norman and the other in Tulsa. Our staff is busy developing our next Yellow Dog event and working on an event for Democrats and baseball fans in August. Candidates are signing up for the VAN every day. We welcome a new intern from OSU and a couple of new volunteers this week. We also wish Ben Odom a Happy Birthday today.

Legislative Moral Audit and the Language of Values

Jeff Hamilton also showed me the Interfaith Alliance's new publication Religion & Politics which is part of their One Nation, Many Faiths Vote 2006 series.

In this publication is a section titled the language of values. It finishes out with a "Legislative Moral Audit" to use when assessing public policy positions. The following questions are posed for those who would seek to balance their faith and politics:

Does the policy:
  • Protect the Constitutional guarantee of the separation of church and state?
  • Deny the rights or opportunities of citizens, regardlesss of their religious (or non) beliefs?
  • Challenge hatred and bigotry?
  • Create a positive vision of America?
  • Make itself a friend of justice?
  • Treat people equitably?
  • Distribute wealth or concentrate wealth?
  • Enhance life for all people or only for select people?
  • Protect the environment?
  • Aid the creation of jobs?
  • Negatively impact the most vulnerable people in our society?

Hamilton asserts that it is "religious to do the work of politics and government well without ever voicing a religious phrase. In fact it's more religious than constantly using religious language without ever doing the challenging work of guaranteeing liberty and justice for all people in a diverse and pluralistic society."

So what are your favorite examples of policies that "pass" the audit? And who are the candidates who support those policies?

Books to Read and A Search for Meaning

I visited with former State Representative Jeff Hamilton today. He serves as chair for the ODP Faith Outreach Committee. We talked about one of my favorite topics --- books and religion. He said as a pastor he speaks to more and more people who are searching for meaning. He is recommending these books for Democrats who wish to speak to matters of personal faith and matters of faith traditions:

  • The Left Hand of God by Michael Lerner
  • Our Endangered Values by former President Jimmy Carter
  • Big Christianity by Jan Linn
  • God's Politics by Jim Wallis
  • Why The Christian Right is Wrong by OKC's own Dr. Robin Meyers

What are you reading?

Last week Courney Ruark and I met a fantastic group of democrats in Alfalfa County. John Herold contacted us and we held a county training and it was a lot of fun. I was able to tell them about the Voter Activation Network and they were excited to get on and start contacting other democrats in their area. Courtney stressed the fact that every vote counts. She even showed how 10 more votes per precinct in 2004 would have helped the democrats take control again. Ann Murrow runs a great group up there. They have monthly meetings and are always looking for more great democrats to attend.
One of the events they are planning is July 14. They are having a Watermelon Feed at the Carmen Park in Alfalfa County. Lisa Pryor will be attending as well as Mike Stake, district attorney candidate, and they are hoping candidates in their district will also be able to attend.
While Courtney and I were driving to Cherokee she was telling me about the Great Salt Plains. She went on field trips there when she was in elementary school and I had never even heard about them. Well, we could not find them. All we saw was a lake. So after the meeting we asked and A.J. Rexroat told us they were going to try to market better because they are so amazing. They told us how to find them and we stopped by on our way out of town. It was absolutely amazing. You can even go out on this mass of white and dig for crystals. I was told it was inevitable to find a crystal every time you go. And if you have not made the trip it is well worth it. You can even stay at the Rexroat's bed and breakfast while you are there. So plan on attending the Watermelon Feed on July 14th and I can tell you how to get to the Great Salt Plains.
Here are some pictures so you understand how amazing it truly is.
An Amazing dinner
The Carl Albert dinner has come and gone, and that hardly seems possible! It feels like we just started planning for the event yesterday...but that is what a superb staff at ODP does for us. It was a great honor to make the remarks about Speaker Albert. Some of the college democrats and even some of the "new to the process" folks never met him, so I thought it was important to remind the audience he was a very caringl person, and not an iconic photograph, who continues to have an impact on many of us today. The kind words expressed to me later by his son made my evening...I don't know how you felt that night, but the new upscale venue and the sold-out crowd sure looked like victory to me.
Nationally, the Democratic Party, will get back into power sooner than later simply because we are sensible and sane people. We are people with compassion for fellow humans, with a plan to make things better for ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation. The Republicans have run our country into the ground…they've been exposed as hypocrites, liars, thieves, embezzlers and running the oil scam. They promise economic prosperity, but it's only for the wealthiest 10 percent! They have squandered Clinton's budget surplus and are deficit spending at record levels. They've alienated us from the reasonable world community, and have us at war with no plan or end in sight......Enough is Enough.
The Tulsa County Party held a day of candidate training Saturday, followed by a Flag Day Celebration that filled the Pipeliners Union Hall in Tulsa. Patti Basnett, Kalyn Free and others put on a great program, and several union locals pitched in on the food.

Special guest was California Congressman Mike Honda, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee. He also attended the Carl Albert Dinner Friday night in Oklahoma City. Scott BigHorse and the Osage Singers also performed, and Sharon King Davis led the audience in the national anthem.

Dr. and Mrs. Hunter were there, along with Will Andrews and Jane Luttrell from central Oklahoma. Sue Barton was there running for Third District Congress, as was Alan Gentges running for Congress from the First District. Others were Lloyd Fields and Frank Shurden, Jari Askins and Pete Regan, Cody Graves, Jeff McMahan, and a boatload of House and Senate candidates. Jim Frasier, Betty McElderry, Jay Parmley and Kalyn Free -- all four of our DNC Oklahomans -- were also there, as well as Debbie Hogue Downing from the Fifth Congressional District.

The Tulsa County Democrats put on a great program. Congratulations!

Best,
Walt

Comanche County

Thanks to Comanche County Democratic Party Chair Mike Weddington and his great volunteers for putting together an old-fashioned BBQ and "political speaking" today in Lawton.

I was privileged to introduce the statewide candidates who attended the event followed by Mike's introductions of local candidates.

Speaking today were State Treasurer Scott Meacham; State Auditor Jeff McMahan; for Lt. Governor were Senator Cal Hobson and Pete Regan; for Labor Commissioner were Senator Frank Shurden and Lloyd Fields; for Corporation Commissioner was Cody Graves.

Local area candidates present included Senator Randy Bass, Representative Joe Dorman, Janice Drewry, Larry Jefferson, Gail Turner, Susan Ulrich, Barbara Burk, Steve Aust, Charlotte Hamilton and Jim Maddox.

Event hosts were Jari Askins, Randy and Kelly Bass, Keith and Amanda Erwin, Ron and Judy Kirby, Carole and Dick Neptune, Robert Place, Don and Jody Sherry, John and Cindy Zelbst, Carter and Mrgaret Waid, Janice Drewry, Jim Maddox, David and Betty Simmons, Michael and Tanja Weddington, Lawton Firefighters Associatin, Local 1882, Earnest and Jane Godlove, Abe Deutschendorf, and Joe Dorman.

Event sponsors were Howard Johnson, Winston Raburn and Spencer Stanley.

Fast facts:

  • Registered Democrats in Comanche County - 27,971
  • Registered Republicans in Comanche County - 15,247
  • Registered Independents in Comanche County - 6,052
  • 42 precincts

Morning After

Last night more than 300 Democrats gathered at the Will Rogers Theatre in Oklahoma City to honor this year's Carl Albert Award winners State Superintendent Sandy Garrett and former ODP Executive Director Pat Hall.

The program highlighted Garrett and Hall while also featuring Governor Brad Henry, 2nd District Congressman Dan Boren and DNC Vicechairman and Congressman Mike Honda from California. (Honda was in town for a training sponsored by INDN's List and the Tulsa County Democratic Party today in Tulsa. This wasn't Honda's first visit to Oklahoma and he promised it won't be his last. Which is indicative of the DNC's strategy for all 50 states, show up in all of the states, build the party from the precincts up. The ODP is the beneficiary of this strategy through the Partnership Program which provides three full time staff members to the party.)

Boren brought a special message from President Bush; well, not exactly Bush, it was Will Farrell's imitation of Bush on Global Warming.....a fun addition to the evening....what a job Boren and Honda have dealing with those Republicans on Capitol Hill....but if things go as we expect, Boren and Honda will part of the majority after the elections in November!

State Treasurer Scott Meacham introduced the Governor who offered up political advice to Corporation Commissioner candidate Cody Graves and other candidates. Said maybe they should consider starting their campaign commercials with a picture of them in front of a stained glass window on a Wednesday night....he continued to say that these Republicans spend hundreds of thousands of dollars telling everyone how religious they are....Democrats don't do that.....Democrats just live faithful lives.....

ODP vicechair Ben Odom gave a personal tribute to Carl Albert that invoked the memory of great oratory and leadership in Democratic politics. Thanks Ben for being our own "little giant."

There's no way I could mention everyone who was there --- but I can say thank you to each and every one for your support of the Oklahoma Democratic Party!

If you've run out of good late night reading and have a burning curiousity about the "death tax" Republicans want to abolish, the nonprofit consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen has just issued a 58-page study entitled "Spending Millions to Save Billions" about the estate tax. You can download it at http://www.citizen.org/documents/EstateTaxFinal.pdf .

This is the report that Democrats are citing on the House and Senate floor as the debate on the permanent repeal of the estate tax roars along.

Did you know that 99.7 of the people who will die in the United States this year will already pass 100% of their assets to their children, free of any estate tax? Did you know that a group of super-wealthy families have spent $490.3 million lobbying for a complete repeal of the estate tax since 1998? Did you know those same families stand to save $71.6 billion if their bid succeeds? Did you know, if the estate tax is abolished, it would cost $369 billion in revenue between 2007 and 2016 alone? Did you know that, without this incentive to donate to charities while alive, the Brookings Institute has estimated that $10 billion a year less would be given to charities?

Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Ben Franklin designed this country on a rejection of the European hereditary aristocracy and grotesque inequalities of wealth. They believed excessive concentrations of wealth were incompatible with the ideals of the new nation. Alexis de Tocqueville observed, "The American experiment presupposes a rejection of inherited privilege." Now the wealthiest of families are quietly determined to reverse 230 years of that American experiment.

Download the Public Citizen study and see what all the fuss is about.

Walt

Filing Day Three.....the Storm

A lot of candidates bring their families with them on filing day. The Weese family from Wagoner County was no different. Dennis and Rae brought their son Luke to the capitol with them this afternoon. I met Dennis and Rae at the National Convention in Boston in 2004 and met Luke last year. They are quite active in CD1 and Wagoner County. Today was Dennis and Rae's wedding anniversary. Today Dennis filed for Senate District 36. The seat is open since Scott Pruitt is running for Lt. Governor. Ever the dapper gentleman, Dennis watched as his bride Rae filed papers for House District 98 against John Trebilcock. The couple said they just couldn't see letting any Republican get a free ride into the legislature so decided they would do their part to provide a Democratic presence in their home districts. Thanks to the Weese family!

(Sam Homan, Wagoner County Democratic Party chairman, stopped by the ODP HQ today. He's getting excited about their annual Legislative Appreciation Dinner next week. Sam puts on a great event and I'm looking forward to attending. Gov. Brad Henry will be the keynote for this event.)

June Cash filed today against Phil Richardson in HD 56. Cash is from shortgrass country, from Hobart, and we visited briefly about people there we both know and are related to, but mostly we talked about where the campaign goes from here. Cash will certainly give Richardson a run for his money! Good luck and thanks June!

Don't forget that you can check all of the filings at http://www.ok.gov/~elections/cflist06.html.

Candidate profiles are available at http://okinsider.com/electioncentral02.oki?.
Calm before the storm

After a busy Tuesday, when I had great visits at the filing station at the capitol with Cal Hobson, John Sparks ( who is running for Cal's seat in the senate) and Jeff Potts, candidate for the state house from Muskogee, Wednesday morning is the calm before the storm that will no doubt hit about 3 pm. Not only will last minute filers show up, but everyone wants to know if they drew an opponent...later today it is a fundraiser for the College Democrats, who are the hardest working bunch of college students I have seen in over 30 years of politics.

Filing Day Two update

Senator Cal Hobson filed for Lt. Governor shortly after I left the capitol this morning. His candidacy brings the number of Democrats to 3 who are vying for the open seat that certainly comes into play with the Senate in 2007. Same number on the R side. One thing for certain, everyone has an opinion about these six candidates. What's yours?

Democrat Sean Burrage will face off with one of four Republicans who have filed for the nomination in SD 2. Burrage, at 38 is the youngest of the five candidates but has already made a name for himself as smart, savvy and gracious. Sean filed on Monday with his wife and two children along for support.

Rep. Joe Sweeden filed today to fill the term-limited seat of Senator J. Berry Harrison. I visited Osage County in the fall. While he had not yet announced Sweeden was campaigning with enthusiasm that I'm certain will carry through this Senate campaign.

John Sparks filed today as a Democrat to fill the vacancy in SD 16 being created by term limits in Norman. Sparks joins two other Democrats, Derrick Ott and Tim Emrich in a battle to fill the seat of Cal Hobson. I visited with Ott yesterday at the capitol and saw Sparks in the capitol parking lot today. A voter in the district told me she received a magnet with the Sooners football schedule on it this week; said this piece of campaign mail was going on her frig; compliments of Tim Emrich. All three have a "plethora" of signs throughout the district.

Senator Mary Easley filed today seeking another term in SD 18. She was hosting a town hall meeting in the district today also.

Will Andrews filed today to challenge incumbent Mike Johnson. Andrews had earlier announced he would run for the House but determined that challenging a Republican seat in the Senate was where he wanted to be. Good luck Will!

Sentinel Ag teacher Larry Peck and Sayre attorney Tom Ivester filed for Senator Gilmer Capps' seat in western Oklahoma. They joined Wayne Walters, a Canute businessman and farmer, in a three-way race for the Democratic nomination. I grew up in that district and have known Peck and Walters for a number of years. I met Ivester recently. This is one of the races where you better shake hands with all three because one of them will be the next senator in district 26. All good people. All have strong ties to the communities they live in and serve.

Josh Woods filed against Mike Schulz in SD 38 today. Keep your eye on this western Oklahoma district and Woods. He announced plans to run for this seat last summer. His plans didn't change when the seat opened early after the death of Senator Robert Kerr. He sat out the special election in May, but has his eye on November.

Today Andrew Rice joined two other Democrats in seeking the nomination for SD 46 where Senator Bernest Cain is term-limited. Rhonda Rudd and Drew Dugan filed yesterday. I don't know why but two Republicans have also filed in this district. I've seen all three Dems out working this one and I expect a strong showing by the Dems in 46. Question is, which one will voters choose in July?

Rep. Wade Rousselot, Wagoner, filed today for HD 12. I'll be going to Wagoner next week for a Legislative Appreciation Dinner. I've been up there a couple of times already and they do appreciate their legislators up there! And for good reason.

Brian McLaughlin who filed this morning joined Gary Updyke and Ed Cannaday making it a three-way primary in HD 15. I heard there may be a fourth candidate there -- we'll see tomorrow.

Two Democrats will challenge Sue Tibbs for her Tulsa seat. Steve Gallo filed yesterday and Connie Dodson filed today. Both attended a candidate training sponsored by the House PAC yesterday held at the ODP. Either one will serve the district better than Tibbs.

Two Dems filed today for HD 36 where Rep. Joe Sweeden is leaving to run for the Senate. Either Scott Big Horse or Jack Rankin will give the Repub a good run and help hold that seat for Dems.

Democrat Doyle Lewis filed today to unseat an Enid Republican in HD 40.

Folks in Norman are watching with keen interest as the field of candidates to unseat Thad Balkman inb HD 45 develops. Wallace Collins filed yesterday followed by Estelle Cash today. We hear two others will file making it a possible four man race; only thing is it would be two men and two women in the primary!

Also Troy Green, Norman, filed against the grandstander Randy Terrill. Troy is solid and he's been a valuable volunteer at the ODP.

Al McAffrey joined Casey Davis on Tuesday in the Democratic primary for HD 88. We expect to see Nathan Powell file on Wednesday making that one a three way primary for a seat held for years by now term-limited Debbie Blackburn.

Tuesday's filings also included Charles Gass for HD 100.

Tomorrow is the last day of filing for the November 2006 elections. I expect we'll see more activity than on Tuesday.
Filing Day - One and Two

Lots of action at the capitol yesterday for day one of filing, 415 candidates filed and about 200 more are expected to file either today or tomorrow. One hundred twenty-six Republicans filed with 125 Democrats filing. The others filed as Independents or filed in non-partisan judicial races.

Right now there are more press and staff standing around than there are candidates.

Yesterday the crush of candidates, on both sides, was a great lesson in civics and politics (not to be confused as one and the same.) Some of the candidates we saw included State Superintendent Sandy Garrett who filed with a group of young supporters surrounding her. We also saw House Democratic Leader Jari Askins with her mom and other supporters. Jari is one of three Democrats vying for the Lt. Governor's nomination. She has obviously been involved in recruiting some excellent Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives. Peter Regan filed his candidacy for Lt. Governor surrounded by supporters and former Governor George Nigh.

ODP vicechair Ben Odom was at the capitol yesterday afternoon when Gov. Brad Henry filed for re-election. Henry leads the top of the ticket for Democrats this year; along with our popular Atty. General Drew Edmondson and other Democratic incumbents State Auditor Jeff McMahan and State Supt. Sandy Garrett. Also heading the top of the ticket are Henry appointees Kim Holland for State Insurance Commissioner and Scott Meacham for State Treasurer.

The Oklahoma Optometric Association is giving out carrot cake donuts. You may remember that there has been an "issue" between the opthamologists and the optometrists for a couple of years regarding "scope of practice". Sandra Naifeh, the associations executive director and Edmond mayor, and yes, a Republican, said that the issue is to some degree about the differences of access to health care in rural and urban areas. I say Democrats win when we point out the differences in priorities regarding health care....we think everyone should have affordable, accessible health care --- and that we are all healthier when we all can see a doctor when we need to. Health care is definitely an issue that reaches into every home in Oklahoma. I wish the debates were more about this kind of issue than the fake issues that the Republicans create to generate fear and anger amongst voters.

The Denise Bode parade of ten just came around the corner. She's now pontificating about her strong family values and the fact that she teaches a Bible study class....absolutely the number one thing that very few voters really demand in a Congressional candidate. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just that Congress is about a lot more than faith and family values. How about running on her record as Corporation Commissioner? Oh, maybe not.

The Mary Fallin parade was here yesterday --- in the crowd of other candidates. She didn't get the full attention of the media that Bode is getting this morning.

Democrat Bert Smith filed for CD 5 early yesterday morning, assisted by his 4-year old grandson. Bert's message is strong and based on his public service as an army officer and recently as a public school teacher. I haven't seen Patricia Presley or Dr. Hunter yet. I did hear that Dr. Hunter planned to file on Wednesday because he was in DC for meetings Monday.

Talked to Alan Gentges from Bartlesville who practices law in Tulsa yesterday. He plans to challenge John Sullivan for CD 1. Good luck Alan!

Brian McLaughlin, Stigler, was one of the Democrats filing this morning for the House of Representatives. He is filing to replace Ray Miller in HD 15 who is not term-limited but made the decision to not run for re-election after the disgusting antics of the Republican leadership took a particularly cruel turn on him on the House floor this spring. An attorney, McLaughlin says he has a reputation as a fighter for the people and he's now looking for another venue to fight for the good people who live in SE Oklahoma. (Watch for other candidates in this predominantly Democratic district; bets are that the primary is the real deal in this one.)

Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland just walked in with her campaign staff. Honestly, that woman has done more to raise the level of integrity, honesty, and responsibility to that state office than anyone in recent or past history. I am particularly proud that she is a Democrat who is a tireless advocate for Oklahoma consumers and citizens. In her first year in office she recovered $11 million for consumers, an all-time record for the insurance department, for the people of Oklahoma. She is a true watchdog and the people will be well-served to elect her in November.

CD3 candidate John Coffee Harris filed yesterday, he told me the campaign is building in strength and number of supporters. I just saw Sue Barton check in a few minutes ago at the "officials" table. Yesterday she was campaigning in Altus, Hobart, Cordell and Blair. She talked to some of my favorite Democratic women in Hobart, Nellie Perry and Linda Binghom. She is also running for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District. Haven't seen candidate Greg Wilson yet, but I heard he is filing. Greg serves on the ODP's Veterans Committee. All three have been out in the district this spring rallying supporters for the chance to challenge Frank Lucas (who filed yesterday, along with Tom Cole in the 4th CD). Barton said she's driven upwards of 5,000 miles so far throughout the 32 county district.

A young Democrat, 22-year old Cory Spocogee, from Jenks just filed for HD 69. He says he has experience working in a long-term health care facility in Tulsa and is completing his associate's degree from Tulsa Community College. He's been studying political science and history. He's not satisfied with the $50 he says seniors in Oklahoma have to live on....that's not right, he says. He'll also focus on cutting the cost of higher education so more students can attend college without acquiring massive amounts of debt. I wish more young people would take their civic duties so seriously.

It's 10:30 a.m. I need to check in at the office. Ben is on his way in to the capitol and I'm on my way to the office for a while.

Filings are posted periodically at the State Election board website http://www.elections.state.ok.us/cflist06.html. Be sure to "refresh" your page if you look at it over a period of time so you get the updates.

Flash Point

Vicechair Ben Odom filled in for Democrat Mike Turpen today on Flashpoint on KFOR-TV. Odom joined host Kevin Ogle and Republican pundit Burns Hargis with guest Scott Pruitt. Odom pushed Pruitt to support or reject a raise in minimum wage, Pruitt punted. Odom also noted that Pruitt's probably the first ever to run a Lt. Gov. campaign on the promise of great parking in downtown OKC...Pruitt, as Odom pointed out, has been touting the Bricktown Ball Park's great parking rather than campaigning on issues that matter to Oklahomans. Ogle promised to have all Lt.Gov. candidates on the show soon. And I'm guessing Ben will be back too!
Grading the Session

There was a lot of ink and bytes used on grading the legislative session last week. Seems everyone is weighing in on the budget battles and everyone has an opinion. Personally, as a former teacher, I would obviously give the session an "I" for incomplete. (Without a budget, it is incomplete.) And personally, as a former teacher, I'd like to see teachers get that proposed $3,000 salary increase. Personally, I'd like for state employees to get a raise. Personally, I'd like to see us make strategic investments in our state's infrastructure before considering targeted tax cuts. Personally, I'd like to get this wrapped up and get on with the campaigns; or is that what the budget battle is really about? the campaigns?

Ken Neal shared his opinion with readers today. He calls it "power politics" in this morning's editorial in the Tulsa World:

2006 Legislature spent session in conflict instead of moving state forward

The 2006 Legislature could have done more to advance Oklahoma than any in recent history. Instead it will be remembered for political wrangling and pettiness. More than anything, it represents a missed opportunity.

Rarely does Oklahoma have the booming economy and therefore the state government income to give it a chance to gain on the rest of the nation. It happened this year and with luck will continue into next year.

This bunch squabbled from February up to the end of the regular session on May 26, forcing Gov. Brad Henry to call a special session to get the normal work of the state done, something that has not been finished..

It appeared that an agreement to cut the income tax rate and increase the standard deduction had been reached and there were talks continuing on the spending side of the 2006-07 budget when the lawmakers disappeared like a covey of quail.

There were few, if any, lawmakers at the Capitol last week, and with the filing period for state offices begining Monday [ 173](June 5)it is doubtful that legislators will return before June 12.

Nothing is certain, but the agreement on taxes reportedly would reduce the state income tax from 6.25 percent to 5.65 percent the first year; to 5.5 percent for two years and ultimately to 5.25 percent if revenue holds. The hike in the standard deduction would be phased in during four fiscal years, effectively lowering taxes to Oklahomans of average income.

The combination ultimately would reduce state income by at least $400 million a year but about $90 million in fiscal 2006-07, which is under immediate consideration.

Despite the schoolboy wrangling, it's not too late for the Legislature to move Oklahoma services forward.

It is not as if everything is up to date in Oklahoma. The opposite is true. Oklahoma badly needs to improve. Its schools lack support. Higher education struggles. Public health services lag. Prisons are full. Roads and highways are terrible and getting worse.

Todd Hiett, who became the first Republican speaker of the House, has no realization of the political value of building the state, believing tax cuts are the answer to everything, including his race for lieutenant governor. Imagine the political benefit to him and his party if he could boast using part of $1 billion in surplus to propel Oklahoma forward in its 100th year! Instead, with the help of hard-headed Democrats in the state Senate, he will be remembered as a roadblock to progress.

The surplus money (even after an affordable tax cut) could still be invested in state needs. A major program for roads and highways, for example, would result in a construction flurry and untold jobs. That would give the Oklahoma economy a boost, something Hiett claims only a tax cut will do. The difference is that if the money is spent on infrastructure and services, Oklahoma will have something of value to show for a prosperous time that might not continue.

Maybe the worst effect of a highly paid state Legislature quarreling like school children is the discouraging effect on citizens. The legislative process has become so convoluted and the members so intent on playing games that the press and television with reporters and cameras on the scene daily have trouble knowing what's happening. No wonder there's very little Capitol coverage on the nightly news.

Imagine lawmakers so dense that they can't explain their work in front of television cameras. Or legislative leaders who make decisions behind closed doors, leaving individual members to choose sides and go play ball! That happened in the 2006 session.

Despite the election year theatrics, it makes little difference which political party is in control. This session was marked not only by Democrat-Republican conflicts, but inter-party struggle. The Republicans are split into warring camps with their leaders struggling with each other for office and legislative positions.

And Democrats, with a bare majority in the Senate, have nearly as much strife in their own caucus as with Republicans.

This session was marked by the naked ambition of individuals who care about the state only as it figures in their own plans.

The irony is that the ambitious lawmakers would have been far more popular with the people whose votes they seek if they had performed responsibly and behaved as ladies and gentlemen.

The best politics is usually the right thing. That's apparently a hard lesson for this bunch.

So what do you think? How do you grade the session?

Nationalize Local Elections

People often ask us how Democrats will do in the 2006 mid-term elections, and, here in Oklahoma, whether Democrats can hold the Senate and/or make any inroads toward regaining the majority in the House of Representatives. I’ll talk more about that later, but one thing is obvious in 2006: the Democratic Party is poised for a very successful November if we fight hard and work smarter. And nationalize local elections.

Nationalizing local elections means making this year's local elections about the failed Presidency of George W. Bush and the abysmal record of the Republican-led Congress. Make these elections, from the courthouse lawn to the halls of Congress, about the dismal leadership of Republicans.

This President has been a disaster. Already historians are writing that he is likely to be considered the WORST PRESIDENT EVER. His approval ratings are at historic lows, getting into Nixon territory at low-30’s to high-20’s. Based on current Survey USA approval ratings, President Bush is at 50% approval or better in just three (3) states: Idaho (52%), Utah (51%), and Wyoming (50%). In terms of electoral votes, if an election were held today, based on these approval ratings, out of 538 possible electoral votes, President Bush would receive 12. Twelve votes.

Oklahoma gives Bush his 4th highest approval rating: 48%. But, Oklahomans are beginning to come around. In the latest Survey USA 50-state summary, Bush’s disapproval rating in Oklahoma is 51%. And, look how high his disapproval is in states surrounding us. In Louisiana, 54%. In Bush’s home state of Texas 56% of the people disapprove of the way he is doing his job. In that bastion of hard-right conservatism just to the north of us, Kansas, 61% disapprove. And, it gets worse. Bush’s disapproval in New Mexico is 63%. In Arkansas 64%. In Colorado 64%. In Missouri 68%. Now, that’s disapproval.

But there’s more. Remember those key battleground states from the 2000 and 2004 elections – Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania? The people there have already seen enough.

Bush Disapproval in Key Battleground States

  • Florida 61%
  • Ohio 65%
  • Pennsylvania 70%

Survey USA, 5/15/06

That’s a rejection of historic proportions. But, as bad as the numbers are for the job President Bush is doing (with good reason), the figures are worse for the Republican-controlled Congress. The disapproval rating for Congress is consistently in the 70’s. That’s worse than 1994, when Republicans took control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Overall, Republicans are suffering a meltdown of monumental proportions. That’s why the time is right to nationalize the elections. Now, is the time for Democrats to change the direction of our country and provide real, effective, responsible leadership.

When you are out campaigning this year, or talking to your friends and family, remind them how the rest of the country is saying NO to Republican leadership. And, how Oklahoma should, too.

Point out the utter disregard the right-wing Republicans have for our Constitution and the best interests of our country. Need some examples?
  • The misguided war in Iraq.
  • Failure to secure our borders.
  • The monumental national deficit.
  • Tax cuts that help the rich and punish the middle class.
  • The destruction of vital international relationships.
  • High gasoline prices and lack of a coherent national energy policy.
  • Unwarranted, illegal spying on Americans.
  • Disregard for Social Security and Medicare.
  • The flop that is No Child Left Behind.
  • Jack Abramoff.
  • Katrina.

Remind your friends and neighbors that a vote for a Republican at any level is a vote in favor of a philosophy of governing that is irresponsible, ineffective and corrupt. Remind them that the reckless, incompetent policies of the Bush Administration and Republican Congress is the kind of government you get from people who believe that our own government is the enemy. How can they call themselves leaders when they are dismantling the government and breaking the spirit of the people which have made America the greatest nation in the world?

But, I believe the red tide of radical Republicanism is turning. I urge each of you to help the Democratic Party define the terms of this election before the Republicans do it for us, on their terms. Make the elections of 2006 about rejecting the disastrous policies of the GOP (Greedy Old Party). Reach out to independents, moderate Republicans and disaffected Democrats and invite them to join the Oklahoma Democratic Party in saying YES to the progressive Democratic vision of governing that respects our rights, invests in people and builds community.

The far-right Republicans cannot be trusted to lead. The future of our state depends on us to unite and take bold action. We can take back our state and put it on the right course before it’s too late. But to do that, we must nationalize the 2006 local elections. The time to do that is now.

Last Night

Kudos to Tim O'Connor for a great banquet for Labor and Friends last night. I always hate to name names for fear of leaving someone out but I want you to know some of the politicos and candidates who were there supporting Labor.

Ben Odom and I enjoyed sitting with our staff; Teresa Hill, Courtney Ruark, and Lindsey Cox. (Jason McCarty was enjoying the festivities at Red Earth, so was there with us in spirit!)

As it turned out, Dr. Hunter, candidate for 5th District Congress, sat with us. (He also had the back cover ad in the program; I told him to bring his lovely wife to the next event and he said he would bring her to the Carl Albert Dinner next week.) Patricia Presley and Bert Smith, the other two Democratic candidates were also there ---- all three were working the room for votes in the July 25 primary. Bert was at the ODP earlier in the day wishing "bon voyage" to a bus load of local Democrats who were travelling to Little Rock this weekend to visit the Clinton Library. Someone will report on that excursion when they return to OKC.

(I do believe we can win the 5th District seat. Have you looked at the disapproval for Republicans in Congress lately? But everyone will have to work smart for us to win. What do you think?)

All three Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor were also there working the room --- it's always good to see Jari Askins, Pete Regan, and Cal Hobson. I shook hands with all three because one of them WILL be our next Lt. Governor! (Did you vote for your choice for Lt. Governor at www.okinsider.com yet?)

Speaking of primaries, both Lloyd Fields and Frank Shurden were there hunting for votes for the Democratic nomination for State Labor Commissioner. Again, make sure you shake hands with both of then, because one of them WILL be our next Labor Commissioner.

State Treasurer Scott Meacham was there as a major food sponsor. Thanks Scott! Campaigning with him last night was his lovely wife Susan and campaign manager Amy Sparks.

State Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland was there. My she's done a great job restoring honesty and integrity to that office. She's been raising money and attending many, many local and county events throughout the state. What a leader she's becoming! And she's a Democrat! I think Emily Hall was there for the Holland campaign also.

State Auditor Jeff McMahan and his wife Lori were there. They are part of the good government group that we need to return to office in November.

Speaking of good government, Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel and Commissioner Jim Roth were both there. Folks who live in OK County should be very, very proud of the great work of those two men! We could add to that crowd by electing David Prater OK County DA. He and his wife Tamra were there in support of Democrats and Labor.

Senator Debbe Leftwich, Senator Connie Johnson, Senator Cal Hobson, Senator Frank Shurden, Representative Jari Askins, Representative Richard Morrissette, and Representative Rebecca Hamilton were there from the State Legislature. We all owe this esteemed group for their hard work this past session.

Other party "notables" or officers who were there included 5th District Chair Jeremy Hendricks, 4th District Secretary Judy Calhoun, and State Central Committee Affirmative Action Members Garland Pruitt and Louise Darrington.

My friend Anthony Douglas from the NAACP sat at the table next to us. It's always good to see Anthony! And speaking of friends, I think Barbara Royce personally greeted everyone who attended, what a great friend she is from United Way! Also spoke with Matt Jordan from AFSCME. I expect we'll see more of him in the near future. Welcome back to Oklahoma Matt. It was good to see Myrna Burnam, she's a former Carl Albert Award winner --- yet another great Democrat! Spoke to Carl Owen over the food line; I met Carl through the Wes Clark for President campaign in 2004.

Pat and Melanie Hall were there too. If you haven't made reservations for the Carl Albert Dinner next week, do it on Monday. We are almost sold out and we will honor Pat along with Sandy Garrett for their long time service to and support of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. Two great Democrats!

Legislative candidates I saw or shook hands with include Derrick Ott, Tim Emrich, Rhonda Rudd, Casey Davis, Anastasia Pittman, Larry Foster, Larry Gooch, Pat Potts, Jennifer Seal, Troy Green (one of my favorite people, he and his wife Nancy are great volunteers, not to mention wonderful people), and Wallace Collins. I'm quite sure others were there -- I think Nathan Powell was there but I only spoke with his charming daughter Ashley.

It was good to see so many young people there, most of them are working on campaigns this summer....they will be our future candidates so we must encourage them every chance we get. I saw James Henson, Jill Steger, Jason Ziesch, Emily Hall, Thomas Privett, Ashley Powell, James McSpadden, Nick Robinson (one of my former middle school students) and Zach Eddington (a former ODP intern). A special thanks to these young people for their hard work and dedication to our Democratic candidates and principles. Seriously, they are the future. ODP staffers Courtney and Lindsey have put together a My Space site for OK Dems to start a conversation and network of young OK Dems. Watch for a story on this soon.

Between Tim's introductions and Frosty's inspirational comments we enjoyed singing, eating, and campaigning. The two songs were Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" and the Labor anthem "Solidarity" (to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"). Frosty, not one to mince words, encouraged the Democrats to support Democrats and stop the infighting. He challenged all the Democrats to financially support the Party. He and Helen support it and will continue to support it. (We thank them for their strong financial support and for their ongoing witicisms and criticisms -- something about speak the truth to power.) Frosty encouraged the Democrats to stay true to our core and to not cave in to Republican lies and bullying. There's no sense in my trying to repeat the admonishments, there's no way I could say it like he did, so if anyone has a copy of his words, send them on and I'll post them here. Frosty's a strict believer in the separation of church and state, and he's a strong Catholic --- strong as an acre of garlic ---- and there's no doubt about his positions, just ask him and he'll answer. His words are salt and pepper to politics. (Can you imagine cooking without garlic or without salt?) Which brings me around to the food last night....great spread, kudos to the caterers. Several at our table really, really enjoyed the pecan pie. I decided however it wouldn't be worth the 500 calories per slice and ate another bite of cantaloupe.

If you missed it this year, make sure you don't next year. Labor and Friends!

YOUR VOTE COUNTS

If you missed the Morrissette - Terrill sparring match yesterday you can see it now at http://www.newsok.com/news9/yourvotecounts.

The segment premiered last week. Rep. Morrissette tells me it will be a weekly match up airing on Thursdays between 4 and 5 p.m. I watched last week and again this week and am thankful for our advocate for middle class and working families - Richard Morrissette - who continues to wave the flag of raising minimum wage.

He says, let the people vote on it. The Republicans know that if the people vote on this one, it passes. But that doesn't match their agenda.

Let the people vote. If you haven't signed the petition to raise minimum wage check it out at www.raiseoklahoma.org.

Let the people vote. Your Vote Counts.

OKINSIDER

Check out the candidate brackets on Election Central at www.okinsider.com. When I was teaching 8th grade civics I would have used this site as mandatory reading for students throughout the elections. There is a lot of information about the candidates, plus facts, trivia, and news items on the site. It's the basics of state government and the current elections.

On the bottom left hand side of the homepage is the current survey. "If you were voting for Lt. Governor today, who would receive your vote?" The 3 Democratic candidates share a total of 69% leaving the 3 Republican candidates splitting 31%. I assume the survey will change from time to time. It's interactive. You can vote and see the results from your own computer screen. Of course, there's nothing scientific about the survey but it looks to me like more Democrats than Republicans are using the site. Check it out and vote for your favorite Democrat!

If you could survey voters about one issue, ask one question, what would it be?
