Local Democratic Activist Finishes Last Campaign

Local Democratic activist and lobbyist Keith Smith died Monday, November 20, 2006 in Oklahoma City. He was actively involved in this year's Democratic campaigns; in particular the defeat of Republican nemesis Thad Balkman. Smith was a Yellow Dog Democrat who lobbied for the Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood. He was a compassionate and tireless advocate for civil rights in Oklahoma. Smith was an avid OSU fan. He will be missed by many friends and family members.

Keith's funeral will be November 25 at 10 am at the Wharton Funeral Home in Alva. There will be a memorial service for him Friday, December 1 at 2 pm in the 4th Floor Rotunda of the State Capitol Building - a fitting testament to his commitment to good government and the people of the state he loved.

Nobody was a more tireless advocate for the disenfranchised and underrepresented. He never shirked from challenges, never backed down from a fight when the cause was right. He epitomized the ideals of the Democratic Party, and his shoes will not be easily filled. We all owe him a great debt of gratitude.

Thank you, Keith, for a job well done.
