Today's Talking Points

Key Point: For five years, Republicans in Congress have mismanaged the government to serve their campaign needs. From stem cell research to the Voting Rights Act, it is time to get to work for all Americans.

Stem Cells
For Americans suffering from debilitating illnesses, for the scientific community, and for the majority of Americans who support expanding stem cell research, there is no alternative to HR 810.

Other bills give political support to Republicans, but only HR 810 gives medical support to Americans.

Democrats are fighting to give millions of Americans the hope of new cures and treatments that stem cell research provides.

Voting for HR 810 is not enough. Americans waiting on stem cell research expect Congressional Republicans to convince the President to sign it.

President Bush and Senate Republicans should put sound science over ideology, and America's future ahead of their own political futures.

Americans want a new direction, where their health and the health of their families are put first.

Another possible talking point:

For 11 years, the Abramoff-Delay et. al. corruption scheme worked to maintain a system of sweatshops, human trafficking, force prostitution and forced abortion on the Commonwealth of North Mariana Islands. The Republican controlled U.S. House and Senate aided and abetted that situation under the guise of “free trade.”

Now, with Delay (hopefully) gone from the House and Abramoff headed to jail, in early June, members of the U.S. House have introduced HB 5550, The Human Dignity Act, which is now stuck in committee. This bill will end the horrible conditions in the Marianas.

Next Wednesday, I would ask each of our Democratic candidates in the five congressional districts to pledge to co-sponsor this legislation and challenge their opponents to indicate if they would co-sign as well.

If they don’t, the point is made: when forced to choose, the GOP will choose the cash profits over the dignity of human life. There must be a balancing point where business can be profitable and the workers are treated wtih dignity.
